Part of the huge Portes du Soleil ski resort, Chatel is a beautiful Savoyard mountain village, slightly off the beaten track, but offering magnificent ski holidays and ski weekends. As it is slightly less famous than some of its neighbours, a Chatel chalet gives you the extra luxury of a little peace whist on your skiing trip, yet still offering a huge amount of variety for skiers.

Things to do on holiday in Chatel, France

The Chatel ski resort is open for business from December until April, and is particularly good for intermediate skiers, not only due to the excellent reputations associated with the ski schools, but for the natural abundance of intermediate pistes. Taking accommodation in Chatel gives you access to not only the 85km of piste and 41 lifts and 5 devilish black runs of the Chatel ski resort, but it also lets you investigate the varied resorts of the Portes du Soleil ski region too, meaning that even the experienced skier will not be short of entertainment whilst staying in a Chalet ski chalet. There are also 36km of cross-country skiing trails available, taking you to some of the most spectacular viewpoints in Chatel.

Summer is a completely different yet equally magnificent time to rent accommodation in Chatel. The rustic alpine scenery looks at its best in summer, as the snow capped peaks form a stunning backdrop for the flower strewn meadows which act like a honey pot for walkers and hikers. There are some fearsome mountain biking trails too, and in spring, the melt waters fill alpine streams, and create the opportunity for white water rafters and kayakers to tackle the slopes of Chatel too. There is also a superb 18 hole golf course in the area, offering stunning alpine views whilst you play.

Although Chatel is one of the quieter resorts in Portes du Soleil, the village centre still caters happily for those looking for a bit of après-ski after a hard day in the mountains. Being a traditional village and not a purpose build ski resort, Chatel focuses around the quaint village centre, which offers some fine restaurants and fun bars.

Places to holiday in Chatel, France

Another of the Portes du Soleil resorts, Avoriaz, will be of special interest if you prefer snowboarding to skiing. Although Chatel does have a snow park itself, Avoriaz is the snowboarder’s centre within Portes du Soleil.

Les Gets is also highly popular with intermediate and beginner skiers. However, moving from a Chatel chalet means leaving the authentic village charm to the slightly more cosmopolitan and commercial centre that is Les Gets. You can find ice rinks, cinemas, saunas and bowling alleys in Les Gets, and you will undoubtedly get to know the resort if you take Chatel accommodation for any length of time.

Weather in Chatel, France

During the winter, warm clothing is essential, but during the summer months, temperatures are remarkably warm. In July and August, average temperatures hover on the warm side of 22°C, making this a beautiful place to walk and relax during the summer.

Flights to Chatel, France

Geneva Airport (GVA) is under an hour from Chatel, and there are plenty of transfer options direct from the airport. However, although this is the easiest option, it is probably the most expensive. Getting the TGV from Paris to Thonon-les-Bains and connecting with the 45 minute bus from Thonon-les-Bains to Chatel is equally painless and offers a much cheaper way to reach a Chatel apartment or villa.

Great Apartment with good views of the mountains

We had a lovely stay for 8 nights in this well-equipped apartment. We were two adults and one teenager so there was enough space and the wi-fi was very useful. There was plenty of bedding and towels which was very useful and the location is excellent for the Super Chatel ski lift as you just have to walk out on from the ski locker on the second floor and you are there. The owner was also very friendly and helpful. The apartment is also in the centre of Chatel so a short walk to the shops, bars and restaurants. There is also a private parking space.

Spacious and comfortable

Great place: the interior was as lovely as it looks in the photos. We had a marked parking space and garage, and the apartment was a short drive from the Linga lift and car park, with several ski hire shops, but it is also easy to get to Pre La Joux and Super Chatel, and only a few minutes drive into Morgins, enabling you to take full advantage of a Portes De Soleil lift pass. The free (with ski pass) bus network will also take you to all these places.
