Make a villa in Cereste your home away from home

Cereste villas put guests on the edge of the Luberon forest in the Parc Naturel du Luberon. The large but picturesque village hugs the side of the huge Encrème river gorge, and consists of ancient stone houses with clay-tiled roofs, shaded alleys and infrastructure dating back to the Romans and Gauls. As a base for walking holidays, they don't come much better than Cereste accommodation, with unfettered access to the incredible Provencal scenery, mountain villages, legendary cuisine and superb local wines.

Apartments in Cereste typify the medieval nature of the town, with a distinct old town central section and more modern houses on the outskirts and to the west. The Alps to the north and east provide skiing opportunities in the winter, while the coast to the south is reachable by car for days out on the famous beaches of Cannes and St. Tropez. Most Cereste holiday rentals have their own pools, and come with a private barbecue area, fully kitted-out kitchen and laundry facilities.

Things to do

Beaches: The famous beaches of Cannes and St. Tropez are 2-3 hours' drive away from Cereste self caterings, but what trip to the south of France would be complete without the chance to see these legends of the coast? HomeAway offers holiday accommodation in Cannes itself if a more beach-orientated holiday is desired. For beaches and watersports closer to home, the huge Lake of Sainte-Croix has plenty of both at only 40 miles away.

Food and drink: There are a handful of snack bars, cafés and restaurants in and around Cereste, with Restaurant La Pastorale having the best reputation, though the ambiance and facilities are certainly of the rustic variety. For fine dining with all the airs and graces, visitors have to travel to the nearby town of Manosque, about 30 minutes away by car.

Outdoor pursuits: Walking, rambling and hiking are by far the most popular outdoor activities for guests at accommodation in Cereste, with forests, mountains and hills to wander through, soaking up the history with fields of lavender scenting the air. The 65-mile Luberon en Velo cycle path also runs through the village.

Shopping: Shopping is what one might expect from a Luberon village, but there is a market every other Thursday. There is a more regular and extensive market every Sunday in nearby Reillanne, where HomeAway also has luxury holiday homes to rent. The nearest supermarket is in Manosque, about half an hour away by car.

Weather in Cereste

The effect of the Mediterranean climate of the coast is lessened somewhat as the lands rises towards the Alps, so temperatures don't quite hit the highs at sea level. There is lots of sunshine, however, and average maximum temperatures in the summer typically reach 23-24°C. Cereste can also be used as a staging point for skiing holidays in the Alps, with winters highs averaging around 10-11°C. Precipitation is light annually, and concentrates in the autumn.

Travel to Cereste

Cereste is 63 miles from Marseille Airport, and 130 miles from Nice Cote d'Azur Airport, with the latter providing the wider selection of airlines and direct flight options, being the second busiest hub in France. Cote d'Azur accommodation more convenient for the latter is widely available. Cereste can be driven to from the UK, however, with the trip taking two fairly easy days from the UK. Trains are an option too, and can get visitors to the south of France from London in close to nine hours.

Fantastic location for hiking, dog walking and exploring Provence!

4 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at Hélène et Thierry place in Le Bastide de Jourdan. It ticked all the boxes for us in terms of location and size - a wonderful enclosed garden the dog could enjoy, a covered pool, BBQ. The village itself was charming. We'd walk to the bakery most days and then did plenty of hikes nearby. We also explored Bonniuex, Lacoste, Colorado Provencal, Aix en Provence all easily reachable by car. Hélène et Thierry ended up staying in the small converted house on site which wasn't a problem for us but we weren't told about this beforehand nor the cleaning which was asked for in cash for when we departed. We ended up getting up early and cleaning ourselves as there had only been the two us and it was no problem. Would recommend travelers check these details with the owners beforehand to avoid any complications. A great place and would definitely recommend.
