The town of Cavaillon in Provence, France hides a huge number of treasures from those passing through the town headed for the fashionable beach resorts of the Cote d’Azur. There are a great number of attractions to see, dating back well past the Roman era, and for anyone with an interest in or love for French cuisine, there is plenty to entertain and impress.

Things to do in Cavaillon, France

There is an excellent self guided tour through Cavaillon which doesn’t require any form of guide of prior knowledge. The plaques, marked ‘Circuit du Vieux Cavaillon’, guide you to the most interesting and remarkable sites of Cavaillon, allowing you to explore completely at your own pace. Once you reach the Cavaillon tourist information office, there is also a magnificent detour to try. The 16th century steps, carved out of solid rock, lead up towards to the top of the Mont St Jacques, the large cliffs flanking the back of the town. From here, the views are exceptional, especially from the ruins of the old village, which can still be seen at the top.

As well as being located in the national walking trails into the Luberon Mountains, Cavaillon is also home to a great number of local walking routes and cycle paths. There are a number of cycle shops in Cavaillon offering bike rental. Once in the mountains, the opportunities for rock climbing are almost endless. There are many fantastic routes to try to conquer in the Luberon Mountains, and Cavaillon has a couple of fantastic climbing shops from which to get both equipment and advice. Horse riding holidays are also particularly fun from a holiday rental villa in Cavaillon.

Those with an interest in food will be more than happy staying in Cavaillon villas. There are a disproportionate number of top class restaurants within Cavaillon, and the Monday morning market sells many of the finest products grown or made in the region. The nearby village of Gordes is a wonderful stone village perched high on the Plateau de Vaucluse. Those hoping to walk and mountain bike during their holiday can also find some of the best trails in the countryside surrounding Gordes, both in the Forest of Luberon and along the Plateau de Vaucluse.

July and August sees temperatures reaching into the mid 30’s (˚C) with amazing regularity during the heat of the day. Temperatures remain easily warm enough to sit on the balcony of your Cavaillon villas, sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the finest local gastronomy late into the evening. The region enjoys a fantastic Indian summer, stretching the fine weather until October. Even the winter months are blissfully mild, with temperatures of less than 10˚C very rare during daylight hours.

Travel to Cavaillon, France

Avignon Airport (AVN) is the closest airport to Cavaillon, just 20km away. However, there are only a couple of direct flights each week from the Stansted (STN), provided by Ryanair. Marseille (MRS) is within an hour, and due to the rural nature of the area, a hire car is highly recommended. A taxi from Marseille airport to a Cavaillon villa should cost in the region of 80 Euros if you would prefer not to drive.

Lovely place to stay

We thoroughly enjoyed a lovely week at this property. The house is easy to find (about an hour's drive from Marseille Airport) It was very clean and well equipped. The location is a great base for visiting nearby attractions (Gordes, L'isle sur La Sorgue, Fontaine de Vacleuse, Rousillion) and lovely markets. Lots of supermarkets and a bakery are a short drive away. A car is essential. The pool is lovely and a welcome activity after a hot day! The garden has a lot of privacy. Pierre and Elisabeth are very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed chatting to them and practising our French.They also have a fabulous Dog, our daughter adored him. The Cavaillon melons are delicious! We would love to return one day. Thank you.

We had a great stay. The property is extensive and well fitted out with great facilities throughout (the ice maker was a real bonus!). Thierry was very attentive without being intrusive and responded really quickly to our request for fans in the bedrooms. The pool area was spacious but it was easy to find shade from the midday sun. The large grounds allowed us to play plenty of games. The pool itself is very large albeit unheated; this did not affect our enjoyment of it. Trips to the local towns Cavaillon (more of a working town (but excellent supermarket) and L'Isle sur la Sorgue (prettier) were short car trips and 20 mins on the bike. Fontaine de Vacluse is a nice 30 min cycle and very pretty - easy canoeing (suitable for novices and families) was also close. The property is on a reasonably busy road but the traffic noise was hardly noticeable. All in all we had an excellent time and would go back again. In many respects, the website photos don't really do the property justice - it is better in the flesh!
