Lagrasse, which is listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, is an easy drive away and boasts an 8th Century abbey, a charming old town, with defensive walls and bridges from the middle ages.

-Coast. The nearest beaches are a short drive way at the resort of Leucate. There are eight sandy beaches to pick from here, but the best for families is the main beach, Leucate Plage, which is sheltered from the wind by a cliff and offers two beach clubs.

-Food and drink. Cascastel-des-Corbieres is surrounded by steep hillsides clad with vineyards, and a number of AOCs are produced here, including Fitou, Corbières, Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes. You can purchase wine produced locally from the Maitres Vigneros Cooperative Cave in the village. Food-wise, local specialties include Cassoulet, the famous slow-cooked casserole with haricot beans.

-Nature. There’s attractive nature all around the village, in the form of steep, rugged hills and many acres of vineyards. As you head west and south the landscape becomes more dramatic – the Galamus Gorges are an impressive sight nearby, where the Agly River has cut a canyon dozens of metres deep through the limestone.

-Excursions. An exciting family attraction easily reached from the town of Cascastel-des-Corbieres is the African Nature Reserve in Sigean, where rhinos, lions, ostriches and zebras roam free within a 300 hectares. Narbonne and Perpignan are also worth the short drive – Narbonne has a beautiful cathedral, while Perpignan’s riverside medieval centre is Catalan in flavour and very picturesque.

Stunning gite, gorgeous location

5 of 5
Gorgeous, well maintained gite in a beautiful location. Everything we needed for a family break with our two daughters (10&12) Pool was great, kids enjoyed plenty of swimming whilst my partner and I could relax by the pool in the lovely sunshine. Gite is beautifully decorated, well equipped and plenty of space. Great location, super market close by car, short walk to the bolengerie... amazing pain au raisin! Lovely restaurants in Trebes if you don't want to cook. Adrian and Anne -Marie are great hosts, making you feel so welcome but are not intrusive. Inkey the dog very chilled and layed back, Sky the kitten was great fun .... cuddling up on the sofa in the evening! Wonderful stay, had an amazing time.

Lovely flat in a great location

4 of 5
This apartment is very well situated for all of the life of the village with the beach just a short car journey away . The terrace means the living area is expanded and everything is in good condition and works well. Wifi would be a welcome addition . We had a great holiday here
