The village of Carlux is regarded as the medieval capital of the Perigord Noir, and for that reason receives a respectable share of foreign visitors every spring and summer. Located just 14km from the busier destination of Sarlat, Carlux accommodation is often used as a base for visiting this historical town, but also has attractions of its own – many of which make use of the stunning scenery that the Perigord Noir region is famous for.

With Carlux being perched upon a mountainous ridge, some excellent and far-reaching views can be enjoyed from around the village centre. Enjoying these panoramic vistas will likely give you the urge to explore, with a number of designated hiking paths, nature trails and the Dordogne

Close to the village are the ruins of a feudal fortress, which dates back to around the middle of the 13th century. The fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries, and even in its current somewhat dilapidated state still dominates the village centre. The centre of Carlux is a combination of old stone houses and winding streets, which further emphasise the medieval beauty of the village. The old castle and the Church of Saint Catherine are perhaps the two most popular stop-offs with locals and tourists alike, and are good places to start a walking tour of Carlux.

Carlux plays host to many festivals and events throughout the year, adding further value to a holiday here. The majority of these celebrations occur during July and August, when the weather is almost always hot and sunny and a glass of cold white wine goes down a treat.

Characterful Carlux retreat

This holiday home is beautifully presented and very well equipped with everything necesssary for a comfortable stay in this lovely area. Being part of a very old stone building - with of course the amazing vaulted stone sitting room - it has great character and has been pleasantly and sympathetically modernised throughout. During our stay in November the weather turned quite cold and it was necessary to make use of the wood burning stove in the kitchen - which Richard the owner supplied plenty of logs for - and two portable electric heaters for the other rooms. Being in an elevated postion the property has good views of the surrounding countryside and a pleasant terraced area with dining furniture outside.

An excellent property in a beautiful area.

We were visiting the Dordogne area for the second time having explored many other regions of France in the past 50 years. We found the property exceptionally well equipped, clean and comfortable, and enjoyed the peace and quiet of Le Grezal. We imagine the position is wonderful for couples with young children and the proximity to Sarlat is an added bonus.
