The ancient centre of Carcassonne was included on the UNESCO world Heritage List in 1997, due to its magnificent medieval heritage. Surrounded by imposing stone walls, the old centre holds a huge number of attractions, from the open air theatre to the Basilique Saint-Nazaire and from the fortified Chateau Comtal to the 14 defensive towers that surround the walls. The Carcassonne tourist information centre has guides and all the information needed for an entertaining and informative tour of the ancient city centre. The Carcassonne tourist information centre also houses a scale model of the town allowing you to plan your tour.

In the modern part of Carcassonne, the Musee des Beaux-Arts is a huge attraction, displaying fine pieces from the 17th – 20th Centuries. The trice-weekly food market which comes into town on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays also attract a large number of visitors, but there is no need to buy too much as Carcassonne is also known for the number of top-class restaurants and cafes which can be found throughout the town.

Carcassonne is a great base for cycling holidays in south west France. Carcassonne properties are the perfect place from which to set out into the foothills of the Pyrenees, and regularly feature on the course for the Tour de France.

From a Carcassonne property, the beaches of the Gulf of Lion are just a short drive away. Lovely apartment

Lovely modern apartment, well furnished and equipped with everything you could need. Only English Channel is Sky News, Irish bar across the road shows football matches. The building the apartment is in badly needs some TLC. When we arrived the hall was full of old newspapers, magazines and bags of rubbish, this was cleared away 5 days later but not sure how long it had been there. The staircase is a steep spiral and would not be suitable for those less able. The apt is in a good location with supermarkets, restaurants and s few shops around, it is about a 20 minute walk to the cite and quite a nice walk. It's only about 5-10 minute walk to Canal de Midi where you can get boat trips for around 9 euros. Overall a lovely apartment and we enjoyed our stay.

It does exactly what it says on the tin!

Often properties are misrepresented on these sites but, not in this case. This pretty little house IS at the foot of the medieval city and there is direct access only moments away that, depending on your fitness, will have you in that magical place in five minutes or so. The property is large with two generous bedrooms a large and comfortable seating area and all the comforts you could ask for in a holiday location. The centre of the modern Carcassone is also a short walk so this really is a central location. Yet, it is a peaceful spot and quiet at night. There's a grocery and a newsagent a few doors away and I came to feel like a local going down in the morning to collect a baguette and paper and practice my French. Be warned, though, you won't find many people who speak English but, when you make an effort to speak French, they are gracious, friendly and helpful. Go if you like a quiet holiday, history, architecture and an excellent climate. Stay in this house if you want a home-from-home. Thank you Anna and Ian!
