Make a holiday rental, home, or cottage in Cambo les Bains, France your home away from home

This town in the south-western tip of France is just what the doctor ordered for holidaymakers, at least they did for the playwright Edmond Rostand over a century ago. It is situated in the Basque province of Labourd a tourist favourite which is part of the Pyrénée-Atlantiques region. As the name suggests this locale borders the Atlantic Ocean which means plenty of seaside activity and gorgeous weather to go with it. There is also plenty of biodiversity to be admired as well as unique architecture. The place is also very close to Spain and a sortie there would be the perfect way to cap off an excursion to Cambo les Bains. In terms of accommodation tourists to this area usually put up in houses big enough to shelter groups of over 20 as well as stylish apartments.

A perfect mix of coast and countryside

4 of 5
A wonderfully picturesque and interesting part of France, this corner of Pays Basques is a perfect mix of coast and mountain countryside/tourist areas and places off the beaten track. There are fantastic views of the Pyrenees from this large house which, while not modern in decor, had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We were four older adults and two dogs, but this property would equally suit two families and would be ideal for children. The very friendly Fabienne and Patxie welcomed us and saw us on our way. Loads of things to do within easy driving distance - coast to the west, pretty countryside to the east and mountains and Spain to the south. We had an easy trip to Bilbao and the fantastic Guggenheim art gallery. San Sebastian was as dramatic with its waves breaking over the promenade and as good a centre for foodies as it is reputed to be. Biarritz is pretty and sophisticated, St Jean de Luz is friendly and less formal. St Jean Pied de Port is full of Basque history. There are pretty villages all around. Espelette is famous as the centre for the area's pimento 'industry' and has several good restaurants. All the beaches are sandy and perfect for children and young and old who want to play or just sit and enjoy the sea. Some of the less accessible ones are almost deserted and lovely for picnics. All in all a really great place for a holiday. But do remember that there is a reason that the countryside is so lush and green - sometimes it rains!
