Make a holiday rental home, cottage or villa in Burgundy your home away from home

Burgundy is famous for its magnificent wines. There is however much more to be enjoyed in this rural region of France. With spectacular chateaux, castles and Burgundy villas, it is a favourite destination for not only wine connoisseurs, but also lovers of the great outdoors, adventure tourists and culture lovers. A holiday rental villa in Burgundy allows you to create a holiday of your choice. The Burgundy region is made of four departments, Cote d'Or, Saone-et-Loire, Yonne and Nievre.

Things to do in Burgundy, France

Burgundy is probably most famous for its wines. Burgundy wines have worldwide fame, but each wine is different due to the differences in soil, location, altitude and orientation. Wine tours of the region are hugely popular with tourists and locals alike, and the significant number of local food delicacies like trout, carp, Bresse chicken and Charlois beef mean that taking a self catering Burgundy holiday cottage or gite will provide a magnificent gastronomic holiday.

Burgundy also revels in the historic and cultural heritage from the Gallic remains and Romanesque towers which dominate the skyline to the artistic treasures of the cities.

Renting a Burgundy holiday villa is not only for lovers of fine wines, art and the great outdoors, but there is a range of adventure sports right on the doorstep of most of the self catering Burgundy gites. Rock climbing, potholing, microlighting, hiking, horse riding and rafting are all available along the waterways and hills of the Burgundy countryside.

Also available on the doorstep of any of the Burgundy holiday rentals are a number of championship golf courses and fresh water fishing on lakes, canals and rivers.

Places to holiday in Burgundy, France

The Cote d'Or is a fine wine producing region. It is a particular favourite with both wine connoisseurs and rock climbers due to the steep valleys. There is also magnificent walking to be enjoyed on the Cote d'Or.

Yonne is a rural department dotted with charming small rural French towns, often displaying spectacular architecture, especially churches and chateaux, holding lively markets of fresh produce. The rivers and canals of Yonne are a boating, kayaking and fishing sensation, and make taking a Burgundy holiday villa well worth it.

Weather in Burgundy, France

Summer temperatures are hot and humid, with temperatures routinely getting over 30°C. Winters are cool, and there is plenty of rain to top up the rivers. If taking a Burgundy holiday rental during the winter, pack a jacket!

Dijon-Bourgogne Aiprort (DIJ) services all the Burgundy villas. The airport is 6km from Dijon, and receives flights from London, Manchester (MAN) and Liverpool (LPL) and a few other British Airports.

                                  Perfect house, beautifully located

                                  5 of 5
Had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful house, situated in a charming (and very quiet) village 10-15 mins from all the major sites in the wine region that we wanted to visit. The owner, Sylvie (and Marc) were very welcoming and helpful at all times, giving us recommendations for restaurants and wine tastings etc, and helped us enormously in getting our bike fixed in the local town. The house is stunning and was probably the best equipped rental we have ever stayed in. The house is really well laid out for sharing couples or families (with the top two rooms having some privacy from the bedroom on the first floor - each floor with its own bathroom). The living room and kitchen area is very large, with a really comfortable sitting area, as well as full size dining table. The kitchen was immaculately clean, well equipped and really modern and new. We made use of the all terrain bikes available also. The main attraction however was the gorgeous deck with seating outside, overlooking the vineyard and fields. It was a haven in the heat (we enjoyed very hot weather) using the umbrella when it got too hot. Even on overcast days the evenings in Marey les Fussey were delightful being able to sit outside for dinner with fabulous views. We also tried our hand at pétanque. The wine region was amazing to visit, surprisingly small enough to navigate very easily (by car and bike). The walks and cycles through the vineyards will remain in our memories for a long time. Needless to say, we enjoyed the wine tasting enormously (and did a great informal tasting in the village that Sylvie helped us arrange). If you want a rural location, with peace and tranquillity but close enough to explore all the main sites this house is perfect.

                                  A wonderful 'second home'

                                  5 of 5
The upside of having one’s own secondary residence is, of course, having a perfectly-decorated and well-equipped home in one’s favourite holiday region. The downsides are manifold: sourcing all the furniture and equipment, maintenance, getting a local guardian of the place, and all those other issues one discovers after purchase. Here’s the perfect solution: Peter and Lucy’s home. It’s beautifully decorated with en-suite bedrooms to suit everyone’s mood (insider’s tip: the summer one – red and green – has the morning sun peeping in). Just about everything you could possibly need is there. Squishy sofas, a collection of CD’s to suit all tastes, a perfect kitchen (Sabatier knives!). In short, you have your home away from home without any of the hassle. And Lucy and Peter take a genuine interest in your holiday experience. There’s a book full of useful hints. Not folders, but personal experiences and recommendations. And they truly bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable. This was our first (but certainly not our last) trip to 10PM, and we had a wonderful time. Some of the highlights included • Going to the bakery in the morning. And here’s a scoop, (nearly) live from 10PM: the bakery has changed owners. Overnight. The whole village was agog. But fortunately they only closed for two days to change ownership, and the new baker is great. Excellent baguettes and croissants, and the tasting they organized on Day Two revealed a good line in whole grain bread and a very fetching cranberry/nuts bread as well. • Visiting local restaurants, but above all, • Cooking one’s own meals in the fantastic kitchen, with fresh produce from the markets (Chagny on Sunday!) and the supermarkets (Au Grand Frais in Beaune!) and eating them around the lovely kitchen central island. • And, last but not least, going on a wine-buying expedition with neighbour and now friend Pascal Wagner. Buying very expensive wines in Burgundy is quite easy, but finding great wines at affordable prices takes a lot of insider knowledge. Pascal has it all, and he is a fountain of information on just about everything else as well.

Very nice property close to a lovely town

                                  4 of 5
The property fully met our expectations and Patricia was the perfect host. Within walking distance of a lovely old town we had a wonderful week.
