Make a holiday rental gite or villa in Belves, France your home away from home

Belves is a beautiful medieval city standing above the Nauze Valley in the Dordogne. The skyline of Belves is dominated by seven belfries, although the whole village has an undeniably medieval charm.

Things to do in Belves, France

Walking through the old town of Belves is a real joy. The Tour de l’Auditeur is encircled by ancient ramparts, creating a fortified centre, home to some of the most impressive monuments in Belves including the Hotel Bontemps and the Place d’Armes which acts as the market square on a Saturday morning. The Trglodytic Caves of Belves make for essential viewing on any Belves holiday, with excellent guided tours easily arranged.

The forested sides of the Nauze Valley and the surrounding Perigord Noir countryside will certainly endear any visitor to an apartment in Belves. The countryside is absolutely stunning and fantastically quiet throughout the year, offering the perfect terrain for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Mountain biking is hugely popular in and around Belves, with many mountain biking competitions arranged all year round. The many golf courses and fishing rivers of the Dordogne are never far from a holiday rental gite in Belves either.

During the summer months, visitors are treated extra-specially well. There are guided tours of Belves every Tuesday morning, local farmer’s markets (where you can taste local fois gras and truffle) on Wednesday evenings and daily tours of the Troglodytic Caves. One of the best times to be staying in Belves accommodation is during the first weeks of August when the Belves Medieval Festival springs into life, reverting the whole town to a less familiar time, celebrating all things 15th century. The streets are awash with falconers, jugglers and street performers during the festival, which is very hard to resist getting involved with. The annual Belves Air Show in August always draws a large crowd too, providing an excellent family day out.

Places to visit on holiday in Belves, France

A holiday rental property in Belves is just 25km from Sarlat, the Dordogne’s most famous town. The combination of medieval and renaissance architecture blends together perfectly to create a picture-perfect scene, and as a central town in Perigord Noir, it is also the ideal spot for a special evening meal or a days shopping. Golfers staying in a Belves villa wishing to play golf will also get to know Sarlat well.

Weather in Belves, France

The mild climate of the Dordogne blesses Belves with year round conditions that help keep tourists flocking to the town. During the summer months, daily temperatures usually reach into the high 20’s (˚C), whilst the winter months are wonderfully mild, with temperatures of less than 10˚C rare.

Travel to Belves, France

A holiday rental property in Belves is just 50km from Bergerac Airport (EGC). The vast majority of flights landing in Bergerac have originated in the UK, with Flybe and Ryanair providing direct flights from Birmingham (BHX), Edinburgh (EDI), Manchester (MAN), Gatwick (LGW), Liverpool (LPL) and others. A hire car is strongly recommended for any Belves holiday.

Feedback on experience of staying

4 of 5
The property has character but is basic in the fixtures and fittings, and a little amount of euro's spent on it would make a real difference. We were 6 adults and 4 children for 2 weeks , but only 2 adults for the first 6 days. First surprise was ( and I don't think I missed this on the website) was that there is an allowance for electricity (400kwhr) which I was told would be enough) and after discussion if more was used then it would be charged at 0.50E /kwhr . We didn't use all the allowance , but then we were not that many for 2 weeks ,and did not have cold weather when more would have been used. Also checking its only0.15E from EDF so big mark up. Advise would be to make this clear on website, and to reduce and costs of over usage to the cost of the electricity. There was also the need to put deposit of 400Euros which fortunately I had, but again I don't think this was made clear on website. So this was the first experience which was unsettling. The railway line which runs right next to property I had discovered before by looking at google Earth and checking numbers of trains , and wasn't a problem. The property was generraly secure if you have children, but there was two large gaps in fencing to railway which I had to block with logs. This needs fixing. Inside little things, like side lights not plugged in , and no towel rail holder for towel in downstairs loo, no covers for waste bins in utility room just missed the trick on making things feel more like a holiday home . The pool area is great, and in the summer that's where you 'lived' It was regularly cleaned etc, and there is a great barbecue. Good play area for kids. (apart for holes in fence ! Missing from the description was the hairdryer and when questioned it was just a no, so we had to go out and buy one. Its a great open house with plenty of room and very good sized bedrooms etc . The location of the property is great for Belves which is not overcrowded ineven in the peak of summer hols, and the property is also well located for other main towns attractions. Overall the family experience was great but could have just been that little bit better if small things were there, and expectations were understood at beginning. Would recommend but would highlight the above and would have given 4 stars + if the things pointed out had not occurred. The owner does did not speak English which probably didn't help, but she was very nice, and got her daughter on phone to help which was helpful

This house is as good as it gets. Everything you want is there and the village is lovely but not on the main tourist trail. Many thanks Bruce for all your help. Ron Priestley
