Orange and Avignon are two cities crammed with historical interest, and both just a few minutes from the town. Bédarrides holiday homes are in a fertile region of fruit orchards and AOC wine domains producing some of France’s best reds and rosés. Things to do

-Local heritage. One of Bédarrides’ emblems is the bridge across the Ouvèze River, built in the mid-1600s to replace an earlier Roman bridge that was washed away by floods. The town is surrounded in part by medieval walls, and has an atmospheric old centre. The city of Carpentras is close by, with a 16th Century Gothic cathedral, shaded streets and squares, and tall, dignified townhouses from the 1700s.

-Roman history. Bédarrides is at the heart of a region packed with ancient history. Orange is a few kilometres from the town and is home to a fantastic theatre considered one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world thanks to its intact stage wall. Vaisol-la-Romaine has an archaeological park with paved roads, a villa and spa, while a little further afield are the cities of Arles and Nîmes, both famed for their Roman heritage.

-Avignon. This city has historical interest from a later era. The Palace of the Popes is a tremendous UNESCO listed gothic building, of a surprisingly large scale. It’s commonly held as the best piece of Gothic architecture in the world. Avignon would also be a great place to come for a shopping expedition, with chic boutiques alongside the top high-street names in the Place de l’Horloge-Rue de la Republique area.

-Recreation. When it comes to walking trips there are some wonderful choices close to Bédarrides. The tree-lined banks of the Ouvèze River are ideal. There’s lots of greenery here, and marked trails and picnic tables have been established for visitors. The hills around the town are also lovely; on trails here you’ll notice the scent of thyme. There are abundant vineyards in the area, which all help to make the landscape so evocative of rural Provence.

-Food and drink. This part of France has long been connected to viticulture. You’ll be moments from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and just as close to various Côtes-du-Rhône Villages. A host of these local domains offer tastings, although this usually needs to be arranged in advance. At markets you can buy first-rate local fruit, among them grapes, melons, peaches, apricots and cherries. Black truffles are sourced in the region, and the olive oil is also of an impeccable quality.

Weather in Bédarrides

Bédarrides holiday accommodation is in a part of the country with far more annual sunshine than the national average. Summers are clear, hot and dry, bringing temperatures that rise above 30 degrees in the middle of the season. Winters are also relatively dry, and are milder than in much of the rest of France. Sub-zero conditions are uncommon, and the mercury rises to double figures by day. The wetter conditions occur in spring and autumn, which have a mixture of moderately warm and mild weather.

Travel to Bédarrides

The nearest international airport to Bédarrides is Avignon-Caumont (AVN), which has summer flights from a couple of airports in the UK and sits no more than 20 minutes from the town. At other times of the year you may need to use Marseille Provence (MRS) to get to your holiday home in Bédarrides. It’s about an hour south of the town and receives plenty of year-round services from Britain. Public transport links are limited in Bédarrides, so a car will be necessary for most visitors.

Well equipped and very convenient location

Very nice well equipped apartment. Air conditioning throughout very quiet to run. Table outside in a shady courtyard, lovely for breakfast etc. Nicolas is an easy host, and made some excellent recommendations for excursions. Less than 5 minutes’ walk away is the park and ride “des Italians” and the free shuttle bus into central Avignon, which stops right beside the excellent covered produce market. Closer at hand, at the other end of the street, are two bakers, a fresh produce shop and a very friendly pharmacie. The apartment is convenient for exploring the surrounding area. Avignon itself is a lovely town to wander around, with lots to see, small shops and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Lovely light and airy property.

We had a lovely time in this beautiful property. The location was central to various things that we wanted to do including Arles, St. Remy-en-Provence, Avignon and all the other little hidden villages in between. Loved out time there. P Griffin
