Make an apartment in Bastia your home away from home

It is testament to Corsica's rugged rural character that the second-largest city on the island has a population of only 40,000. Only Corsica's capital Ajaccio, where HomeAway also has luxury holiday accommodation available, is larger. Apartments and villas in Bastia enjoy not only the facilities a sizeable town has to offer, but also its position as the gateway to Le Cap Corse, Corsica's wild northern peninsula unspoiled but for the occasional mountain village or medieval Genoese Tower. Bastia holiday rentals are located in a living, breathing city, which means the arcades, squares and streets provide an authentic Corsican experience rather than one manufactured for tourists. A citadel, old town, and a host of Baroque churches remind visitors they're somewhere special, and the lack of cheap plastic souvenir shops tells them they're somewhere a little different.

Bastia accommodation consists mainly of apartments with a few villas. As one of Corsica's largest towns, Bastia has a proliferation of amenities to keep guests busy. Golf and tennis fans are well taken care of, as are keen walkers, mountain bikers and horse trekkers: le Cap Corse is a huge expanse of village-dotted mountain wilderness to explore.

Things to do

Beaches: Bastia apartments are located on the northern tip of the beach that runs along Corsica's immense eastern seaboard, almost unbroken for 70 miles south to Solenzara. Busier stretches near settlements provide the usual facilities for food, toilet and beach activities, while more remote areas are often nearly deserted even in the height of the season.

Nightlife: Villas in Bastia inhabit one of the busiest nightlife scenes on Corsica, though that doesn't mean it quite matches the excesses of the French Cote d'Azur, where HomeAway also offers luxury holiday accommodation. It's primarily restaurant and café driven, with an extensive bar scene, but only a couple of nightclubs.

Outdoor pursuits: Le Cap Corse is often called 'the island within an island', because of its remoteness. It's an incredible place to explore on foot, by bike, on horseback or by car. Though the vast majority is wilderness, there are remote mountain and costal villages to visit or stage adventures from.

Shopping: If visitors want to shop like a Corsican, they can do much worse than Bastia. While there is the shopping infrastructure one might expect from a sizeable town, it is refreshingly lacking in tourist-trap dross. For the self-caterer, the markets are a dream come true, while speciality stores deal in local wines, olive oils, charcuterie and honey.

Culture: The 17th-century Saint-Jean Baptiste cathedral is the largest church in Corsica, and well worth a visit. The Genoese citadel dominates the town and contains what is known as the New Town along with the Palais des Gouverneurs, from where the Genoese governed Corsica during the middle ages, now a museum.

Weather in Bastia

The Mediterranean climate is mild for most of the year, with temperatures soaring into the high-20s during the summer months. Bastia is worth a visit even in the winter, though, as temperatures are rarely uncomfortable and most of the rin falls in the autumn. Freezing temperatures are virtually unknown.

Travel to Bastia

Bastia has the main airport on the island, which couples with the ferry port to make the town Corsica's main travel hub. The airport caters to most of the major airlines, with many direct links to the UK. Ferries arrive from Nice, Toulon and Marseille, as well as the Italian ports of Genoa, Livorno, Vado Ligure and Civitavecchia.

Excellent apartment convenient for ferry, trains , shops and beach

5 of 5
We were very pleased with this booking. The owner made sure we were met even though the ferry was late in arriving. On the departure day the ferry was again delayed and the owner told us to let ourselves out when we were ready and not feel under pressure. Enjoyed staying in this renovated property, especially sitting on the roof terrace as dusk fell.

Henriette was the best host, and the house is charming. Henriette était la meilleure hôtesse!

5 of 5
Henriette was so kind, she helped pick us up from the airport and deliver us to a rental car later in the week. Above and beyond. She'd also prepared some food (and an aperitif) for our arrival despite our varied and specific dietary requirements (vegan, vegetarian, no lactose, carnivore). Bastia is beautiful and the house was perfect. Eating and cooking outside with wonderful views and a very efficient bbq. She was also most tolerant of my school girl French, of which more below: Henriette était très agréable.
