Things to Do in Alsace Lorraine & Vosges

Strasbourg is the capital of Alsace and it is a major Rhine port. Alsace was once conquered by Julius Caesar and thus is steeped in history. Alsace abounds with castles if you love to visit castles, some of which are quite romantic.   You will find a tremendous amount of representations of different dialects, interesting traditions and even local costumes in the 16th-century centre of Strasbourg. Alsace is filled with pastel-painted villages with sloped tiled roofs that feature painted half-timbered facades, sleepy vineyards as well as fortified towns all of which combine for a tremendous holiday. Other times you’ll run into graceful 18th-century architecture. In Strasbourg do not miss the fabulous pink-sandstone 12th-century Gothic cathedral that you can view in the centre of its old town.

While walking, hiking, biking and even the riding horses is possible throughout the Alsace, Lorraine & Vosges area; we must not forget that it is the centre of incredible French cooking. In fact if you so desire, there are a number of cooking courses you may take in French cooking, as well as culinary demonstrations. Some of the specialties of the area are boeuf bourguignon, cassoulet, coq au vin, sole meuniere, gratin dauphinois and of course, the ubiquitous quiche lorraine! Let’s face it, France and especially this area is truly a gastronomic paradise!

At 1424m high, it displays a hard to believe view of the many vineyards and small villages of the region. If you are a rock hound, you will love to do your hunting all around the Vosges, as scientists estimate that the rock in this region was formed during the Paleozoic Era! If on the other hand you like to collect pottery, you will find your heart’s delight in the entire Alsace, Lorraine and Vosges areas.

Beautiful Vintage in Alsace.

5 of 5
Simply splendid gite in the most wonderful vintage style, with plenty of space and gloriously adorned with myriads of vintage items in every room. Beautifully clean and well cared for, everything about this lovely cottage was just perfect. The gardens on various levels and having many twists and turns, were full of beautiful flowering plants and shrubs , as well as many varieties of roses. Nicole Hornecker and her husband were only too pleased to help and give advice when needed and we really enjoyed being invited out to social gatherings at a twinning association party and to dinner one evening at the Nicole's beautiful house. They brought us fruit to enjoy and encouraged us to pick lovely flowers from the garden. We would certainly book this gite again when visiting the Alsace region.
