Make a Holiday Rental Cottage in Barfleur, France, Your Home Away From Home

Barfleur is a beautiful harbour town located in la Manche départment of Basse-Normandie, a lovely area situated in northwestern France. As the town in which William the Conqueror's ship was built, Barfleur played its part leading up to the Battle of Hastings: the Duke ultimately used the ship to cross the Channel, and claimed the English throne in 1066. Offering visitors the attraction of history and heritage, Barfleur also enjoys a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere, and proffers a range of self-catering rental accommodation. Rustic French cottages, or 'gîtes', can be found nestled both in the town and the surrounding countryside.

Things to Do on Holiday in Barfleur, France

Travellers looking to spend their holidays in Barfleur will find the town perfectly situated for a relaxing break. Less tourist-orientated than many of its neighbouring towns along the English Channel, it's a great choice for those looking to experience a more authentic French lifestyle. Lazing outside one of Barfleur's pretty cafés or restaurants, you can watch fishermen from the harbour as they return with their catch of the day, before enjoying said catch alongside a glass of local cider. Remember to seek out the sheltered coves nearby: there are a number within walking distance, providing the perfect location for a spot of sunbathing or swimming.

Places to Visit on Holiday in Barfleur, France

The 233 foot Gatteville lighthouse, two miles to the north of the town, is the first port of call when arriving in Barfleur. Here, visitors can admire stunning views across the English Channel and the Cotentin coastline, enjoying the peace and serenity so characteristic of the area. There's also a lovely 18th century church dedicated to Mary Magdalene in the town, with a fishermen's cemetery outside. Take a short drive farther along the coast and you'll find the city of Cherbourg. Here, tourists can find a wider choice of amenities and attractions if they so wish, including a cinema and a broader range of shops and restaurants. The Cité de la Mer museum is also worth a visit, specialising in the historical and scientific aspects of maritime life.

Excellent, well kept and great location

5 of 5
The property was in excellent condition, and was exactly what we were looking for. The property itself had great facilities, with a good garden for our kids to run around. It is in walking distance of Quetrehou which has a great bakery, butcher, and small shop. There is a pebble beach a few hundred metres from the property which our kids enjoyed collecting shells on, and some good sandy beaches within a short drive. Overall we had a great time, the property was everything we had hoped for, and we would stay again if we were holidaying in the area.

Charming cottage near the village centre

5 of 5
Charming cottage near the sea, town and marina. Easy to park outside the cottage. The cottage had everything you need for a week's stay, and all of a good quality. We found the bed very comfortable. Contact with the owners beforehand was easy and straightforward and a lovely welcome when we arrived. Saint-Vasst-la-Hougue is a pleasant village with an interesting market on the Saturday, some typical French restaurants and shops. We would highly recommend the cottage and the village.
