Make a holiday villa in Ars your home away from home

Ars is a small, picturesque settlement in a rural area in the west of France. An Ars holiday villa puts you in the heart of wine making country and will provide you a perfect and comfortable base. All Ars holiday villas from HomeAway are furnished with the everyday necessities and some even come with luxury extras like a pool. The area may be rural, which is perfect for those that want to totally relax, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t things to do for those that want to venture out and experience something different.

Things to do

Ars is a little gem. It has the perfect ambience you associate with a traditional village in a wine-making area, nestled among vineyards and rolling agricultural farmland. The River Charente irrigates the valley making it green and charming, whilst beyond Ars, there are plenty of cultural and historical attractions and outdoor activities.

-Cognac is a town just begging to be visited. It’s only a short drive, being about 7kms from most holiday villas in Ars. Many of the Cognac Houses, such as Martell and Remy Martin, offer tours around their distilleries with tastings included. Even if Cognac is not your drink of choice you will still find the tour fascinating.

-Pons is a delightful town which boasts its own mediaeval keep. There is also a pilgrim’s hospital dating back to 1160 which is open to tour. While visiting the town make time for the twice weekly market selling a variety of local products and grab yourself some nice fresh food to take back to your Ars holiday villa to prepare.

-Golf is popular in this little corner of France. Within an easy driving distance there are three golf courses, the Golf du Cognac, the Golf de Saintonge and the Golf de Royan. Each golf course has buggies and clubs for hire so the only decision to make is which one to visit, or you could just visit them all.

-Les Antilles de Jonzac is a great family day out and about 40 minutes drive away from Ars. This water park, one of Europe’s largest, has a multitude of activities from water slides to a fitness centre. If you should get a day with bad weather a visit here is perfect as it is fully enclosed. You can lounge on the artificial beaches each with its own palm trees and completely forget about the weather.

-The Roman Ruins in the town of Saintes make another great day trip to take from Ars. Touring the roman amphitheatre, the oldest and largest in France, can take you back in time when gladiators fought for the crowds pleasure.

The weather in Ars

Temperatures in Ars can range from 3°C in winter up to 26°C in summer around July and August. Although the area is not as hot as the south of France the summers are still pleasant. Rainfall is also light during summer. Winters tend to be quite cold with a good chance of snow and frosts. If you choose a holiday home in Ars in late spring or early autumn you will still get very summer-like weather.

Getting to Ars

The nearest airport to Ars is Bordeaux. You would require a rental vehicle to drive from these airports to your Ars holiday villa. Alternatively you can take a train from London to Cognac and drive to your holiday rental villa from here. The journey by train takes around 8 hours but you get to see some beautiful French scenery as you travel.

Absolutely Gorgeous Countryside Escape!!!

5 of 5
I truly cannot speak highly enough of our stay with Bob and Andy at Les Tilleuls! Everything from the location, to the gite - and especially our hosts - was absolutely wonderful and beyond what we could have expected! We stayed a week in the large gite at Les Tilleuls in Echebrune. The little country town is everything you want from the French countryside: Nestled right on a beautiful vineyard, there are an abundance of tiny little townships along the country roads that guide you through the Cognac region, each of them producing the grapes or Eau de Vie that makes the signature drink for which the region is designated. You can also find a local favorite aperitif - Pineau - which is fresh juice from the grapes fortified with Cognac, and it is delicious! The chateau is about 25 minutes drive from the city of Cognac itself, where you can tour many different Cognac houses and take in the beautiful architecture. The historic town of Pons is only a 10-15 minute drive, where you can dine out, or head into the city of Saintes on Sunday for their incredible street market; flush with local artisan meats, cheeses, olives, pastries - essentially everything you could want. There is also a proper supermarket in Saintes, and another just across the river in Cognac (intermarche). You will definitely want to stay in and cook too! The kitchen is VERY well equipped for cooking, and I even made a cheesecake out of local fresh Chevre! There is a 4-burner gas stove, with an oven and 2 good-size fridges, plus a dishwasher! There are plenty of cups, plates, and various utensils, including cookware, mixing bowls and pitchers, etc. Bob and Andy also very sweetly greeted us with a welcome basket of coffee, butter, preserves, biscuits and baguette! If you are a coffee drinker, fear not. There is a Bosch coffee pod system, a drip coffee machine, and a classic French press, so you really have your choice. Our gite had 4 very comfortable bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms complete with a shower in one and a full tub in the other. The real winner, though, was the living area, where you could enjoy a morning cup while gazing through the floor to ceiling windows that look out over the beautiful garden (manicured by Bob and Andy), and the lovely vineyard beyond. Bob and Andy were so gracious and generous, attending to our every need, and even scheduled a wine tour at Chateau des Tourtes for us! They also happen to be two of the most genuinely kind people, and we cannot recommend them enough!
