Make an apartment in the Alps-Maritimes Valleys your home away from home

The Alps-Maritimes Valleys cut through the southwestern corner of the Alps, straddling the border of France and Italy. Rustic villages perch high on the slopes, commanding stunning views and easy access to a host of mountain, river and coastal activities. HomeAway offers a wide range of holiday homes in the Alps-Maritimes Valleys, many with their own gardens and convenient parking.

Most Alps-Maritimes Valleys rentals are pet and family friendly, though regrettably few are wheelchair accessible. Alps-Maritimes Valleys holiday apartments typically feature fully-equipped kitchens with laundry facilities and sometimes BBQ areaa, access to a pool, internet access and satellite TV/DVD player. Thanks to the more clement summer temperatures at elevation, only a few properties are equipped with air-conditioning.

Things to do

Winter sports: During the winter, Alps-Maritimes Valleys holiday rentals are perfectly positioned for access to the Alpine slopes. This area of the alps is very popular with skiers and snowboarders, thanks to its location adjacent to the tourism hotspots on the Cote d'Azur, which offer unique contrast to the high mountain activities.

Beaches: The 70 miles of French Riviera coastline running from the smart apartments of Marseilles to the villas of Menton is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. The stretch of beach at Cannes, where HomeAway has a selection of holiday apartments available, is artificially sanded for the summer, whereas the more common pebbled beaches of Nice are a consequence of the draining rivers. Private beaches abound, so prebooking a spot is often a good idea.

Nightlife: The Cote d'Azur is renowned for its nightlife, especially if high-class casinos, restaurants, and nightclubs are desired. It's not all glitz and glamour, however, and there are plenty of more reasonably priced establishments for the fiscally cautious holidaymaker.

Outdoor pursuits: The rugged hills north of Toulon, the crag of Saint-Jeanette to the north of Nice, and the hills above Monaco all provide excellent climbing opportunities. Larger areas like those around Vence holiday homes and the Roya Valley can get more Alpine in scope. The Alps-Maritimes themselves, of course, are paradise for climbers and hikers, especially the Mercantour National Park, with hundreds of miles of trails and paths.

Shopping: The shops, boutiques and malls of the French Riviera provide possibly the most exclusive and expensive shopping in the world, which is why this area is so well known as a haunt of both celluloid and real-world royalty. Window shopping and people watching, of course, come completely free of charge.

Weather in the Alps-Maritimes Valleys

Though the Cote d'Azur has a mediterranean climate, there can often be a marked difference between the conditions on the coast and those inland, especially as the elevation increases. Cool and fresh at altitude can be hot and muggy at sea level. The average temperatures during the summer reach well above 20°C, and winters are in the mid-teens – the region basks in over 300 days of sunshine per year.

Travel to the Alps-Maritimes Valleys

Driving across France from the UK isn't a particularly long trip, and is easily completed in a couple of days. Flying in can be done to Nice or Marseille, with the Nice Cote d'Azur airport serving as the operating centre for easyJet. By rail, a direct link from Paris takes about six hours and costs around €100, arriving at Gare Nice Ville station, one of the three in the city. There are also long-distance bus and boat services.

A perfect apartment - amazing location, nestled into the mountains only an hour from Nice, a clean and cosy interior, a great terrace (we were in the upstairs apartment) with fantastic views and only 7 minutes walk into the village centre. St Martin Vesubie is a lovely village/small town, with a picturesque square and lovely old town, with narrow streets and lots of traditional features. Small and friendly, but with everything you need, with some nice restaurants and a great base for walking and climbing. Michelle was a perfect host. We would definitely recommend it.

                                  Clean & modern Sunny appartment

1st class holiday appartment. New, clean & tidy. The owner replied quickly & his agent arrived quickly on our arrival to complete the necessary paperwork! We felt it accomodated 6 perfectly, would use it again! We loved the position in the "Hammeau" sector, slightly above the village, competent skiers can ski to the end of the road. We found the funnicular & free "navette" buses running frequently.

                                  Fantastic stay!

Upon arrival we were greeted by Franck and Nancy with drinks. They were incredibly friendly, giving us a tour of the house and some general knowledge/recommendations for the local area. As we arrived on a Sunday, and hadn't realised the shops were all shut, they were also kind enough to leave us with some pasta to make dinner with! The villa itself is very well kept, the photos do not do it justice! The house has everything you need, it's quiet, and it's not too far from Nice/ Monaco. There is a nearby bakery (down the mountain in the car), and a little further along is a large supermarket. Given the difficulties other travellers faced in finding the villa, we found it first on google maps/streetview, and then entered the exact location (longitude/ latitude) in the sat nav and had no trouble finding it. Hope to come back soon!
