Make a holiday rental apartment or ski chalet in Alpe d’Huez, France your home away from home

Alpe d’Huez is a youthful mountain resort in the French department of Isere. Most known as a brilliant place to ski, Alpe d’Huez is also the most famous stage of the Tour de France, making it perfect for cycling enthusiasts to test their endurance. The resort is not massively pleasing on the eye, but that is largely irrelevant due to the fantastic facilities, both natural and man made, and the breath taking Alpine scenery in all directions. This is a great all round ski resort with some extremely challenging black runs and a 2230m vertical drop, yet plenty enough for learners and beginners, making a ski chalet in Alpe d’Huez perfect for families and mixed ability parties.

Things to do in Alpe d’Huez, France

Alpe d’Huez holidays are dramatically different in summer than they are in winter, but it is the skiing which first propelled the resort to the hearts and minds of the tourist industry. It is one of France’s oldest resorts and boasts the fifth largest ski circuit in the country. The après ski in the resort is excellent, so winter or summer, you may find yourself returning to your Alpe d’Huez apartment in the early hours having sampled the best of the bars or The Underground nightclub.

Skiing in Alpe d’Huez is spectacular, especially the free-skiing, and the resort is one of very few places to react positively to the poor snow year of the late 1990’s by developing a ski area high on the glacier above the usual pistes, ensuring excellent skiing late into the summer. The notoriously tough ski tunnel which connects the high altitude area with the normal ski area is for experienced skiers only, but don’t worry if you are not an expert skier staying in an Alpe d’Huez chalet or apartment, as there are many lifts connecting the two in both directions! Snowboarders and freestyle skiers taking rental accommodation in Alpe d’Huez will be hugely entertained as there half pipes and a terrain park in Plat des Marmottes. Beginners who like the look of an Alpe d’Huez chalet are well catered for too, as there are many excellent English speaking instructors in the resort.

Away from the snow, Alpe d’Huez draws cyclists from across Europe to tackle the infamous stage of the Tour de France. Alternatively, walkers flock to Alpe d’Huez apartments for the glorious views and extensive trails, or to take to the skies hangliding or paragliding. After a hard days sport, visitors have their pick of saunas, spas, 32 bars and a staggering number of nightclubs to recover in.

                              Lovely chalet in great location

                              4 of 5
Beautiful and spacious chalet in excellent location right by the slopes. Great for groups or families. There were 9 of us and it was very comfortable. Very quick and easy ski down to Rifnel and 3 other lifts from where you can go pretty much anywhere you want. Also easy to ski back the chalet, even for newer skiers. We didn't have a car but in the evenings the main town was accessible by free shuttle (although not always on way back if out late for dinner) or 15-20 min walk. We tended to do the latter which was fine even with the kids. Kitchen and dining area also perfect for eating in. One recommendation, do check very carefully the inventory document (in French) that you are asked to sign on the way in and out. We didn't as thoroughly as we should which caused some issues but it wouldn't stop us returning to what is a fantastic chalet in a wonderful resort.

                              Alpes Break

                              4 of 5
The chalet is sited at Hairpin 2 of the climb to Alpe d'Huez with magnificent views on the Navette (free bus) route. There is adequate car parking space, a great outdoor hot tub and a spacious boot room with a Sauna. Unlike most chalets we've used the rest of the living space was dry, warm and airy. It was finished to a high standard with good Wifi and a full Sky package. It has a 'Snug' with TV and DVD etc for the children which was well used. The catering was superb and we had a mixed bunch with allergies etc. The Chalet staff were helpful ,pleasant and professional. We did not ski, but used the lifts and Navettes to go walking. I can strongly recommend both the chalet and resort.

Well equipped chalet by ski slopes and in the town centre

Three families thotoughly enjoyed their stay in the great ski domain of Alpe d'Huez, and especially in the chalet. The younger generation had their own space for play in the basement, while the adults enjoyed the spectacular views from the ground-level living room. Plentiful hot water and the sauna eased the strains of the ski slopes, and the well-equipped kitchen provided meals for all. Nothing was missing except perhaps a light over the kitchen sink and instructions for the satellite TV.
