Make a holiday villa in Aleria your home away from home

Aleria's position as the Roman capital of ancient Corsica means holiday rentals in Aleria put guests right at the heart of Corsica's history. The coastal plain topography around Aleria contrasts to the pervasion of mountains in Corsica, and illustrates why the Romans chose the site as the centre of their power, primarily for agricultural opportunities and the natural harbours supplied by the system of huge lagoons. To this day, this region is one of the island's most cultivated, meaning this particular landscape is responsible for a large part of the farmed produce, especially grapes and citrus fruits. Aleria holiday apartments and villas may be in one of the largest towns in Aleria, but scaled to mainland definitions, it remains scarcely more than a village (though it does host the island's main archaeological museum). With such unfettered access to the sea, as well as the huge beaches along the barrier islands, the mountains a short drive away, and the incredibly absorbing history, rentals in Aleria are particularly suited for those who wish for variety in their holidays.

Aleria holiday accommodation typically comes with its own barbecue area and fully equipped kitchen, with laundry facilities to cater for longer stays. Most have internet access and air-conditioning, which only really needs to be used on the hottest summer days.

Things to do

Beaches: The beaches along the barrier islands are extensive, running for tens of miles in both directions up and down the coast. Commercial facilities may not match the bustling beaches near accommodation in Porto-Vecchio or villas in Ajaccio, but for peace, quiet and seclusion, they're difficult to top.

Food and drink: As one might expect in a coastal agricultural region, the food is spectacularly good. This area produces some of the finest olive oil in the world, is the third-largest producer of French wine, and its people are particularly proud of their honey and charcuterie. Many of the lagoons also farm oysters, said to be a particular favourite of Corsica's most famous son, Napoleon.

Outdoor pursuits: Vineyards are popular spots to visit around Aleria, and there are a surprising amount of tennis courts. Walking holidays, however, are particularly suited to this area thanks to its unchallenging geography, but immense scenery. For the more robust visitor, watersports are available on the coast and the mountains are close for more athletic hiking.

Culture: The historical Roman population of Aleria is said to be around 80,000, which gives some insight into the importance of the place as an agricultural granary for the Empire. The Greeks, Etruscans and Carthaginians also similarly colonised, which is what packs Aleria's museum of archaeology with so many intriguing artifacts.

Weather in Aleria

Aleria experiences a typical Mediterranean island climate, which typically means high temperatures from April to October. Average highs totter around the 28-29°C mark. Winters are temperate with little in the way of cold weather; frosts are almost unheard of. Most of the scant precipitation occurs during the months of autumn.

Travel to Aleria

Corsica's main airport at Bastia is only 35 miles away. This airport offers the largest selection of direct flights to the UK. Ajaccio airport has more limited direct flights, at 65 miles away, but the airport at Solenzara is the closest at 17 miles, but requires a connection through mainland Europe. Alternatively, ferries can be caught from Nice, Toulon or Marseille in the south of France.

A little piece of paradise!

5 of 5
Our family had a wonderful time in the villa. We had absolutely everything you could need. The property is very modern, secluded and quite but the town is only a ten minute drive away and the historic capital of Corte was only an hour's drive through lovely countryside. The heated pool got lots of use as did the outside BBQ and dining facilities which was as well equipped as the main kitchen with an outside TV too! With the main bathroom, en-suite and outside shower/toilet there we no issues for our family of five and it can easily accommodate 6 people. We were all sorry to leave the villa and would absolutely recommend it. The photos on the website, in our opinion, do not do the property justice. Our expectations were pleasantly exceeded. The hosts are very welcoming and maintained good communication on our journey. We wanted for nothing at this villa and would have no hesitation in staying again when we visit Corsica.
