Make a holiday in Ajaccio your home away from home

Ajaccio's chief claim to fame is its status as the home town of Napoleon Bonaparte, quite possibly the most important figure in the history of France, if not the whole of Europe. This isn't the only reason to rent apartments and villas in Ajaccio however: the sheer beauty of the place, as well as its convenient geography halfway up Corsica's west coast, means it has far more to offer than a birthplace oddity. Though HomeAway offers holiday homes throughout Corsica, Ajaccio rentals offer some of the most diverse holiday opportunities: mostly found near the sea, if not by the beach, they still provide proximity to the mountains – activities like hiking and biking are always available, but so is the chance to sail, swim and sunbathe.

Ajaccio accommodation is probably not the best choice for poolside sun worshippers, as only a handful of properties feature one, typically because the convenience of the coast usually negates the need. Fishing is for this reason a popular pastime in the resort, and there are many opportunities to cast a line. Tennis and golf fans are also catered to at the majority of HomeAway's villas in Ajaccio, but only about a third welcome children, and even fewer are equipped with the facilities for wheelchairs due to their rural nature.

Things to do

Beaches: Rocky headlands and sandy coves share the coast in both directions from Ajaccio self catering, with more than 20 beaches available in the bay itself. These can fill up quickly in the high season, however, so roaming further afield in a hire car is a definite advantage. There are bus stops all along the coast, but public transport on Corsica is notoriously unreliable.

Nightlife: Ajaccio has a fairly adult, refined nightlife, distinct in its lack of Jaeger bomb races and the like. The focus of socialising tends to be the cafés and restaurants rather than ear-pounding bars and frenzied nightclubs. There is a casino open until 4am, but it does require patrons to dress 'appropriately'.

Outdoor pursuits: The usual suite of watersports are available from outlets around the bay to take care of any water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and diving needs. Tennis and golf are equally well represented, and excursions into the mountains are easy to arrange, whether on foot, bike, horse or 4x4.

Shopping: Ajaccio offers Corsica's most exclusive shopping experience to cater to the sailing clientele, but saying that doesn't mean much, as it consists of little more than a few boutique stores. There are standouts, however, such as the Boulangerie Galeani for baked confectionary and U Stazzu for charcuterie. Ajaccio also has one of Corsica's best food markets.

Culture: Though the imposing 15th-century citadel dominates the town, it's sadly off limits to the general public. The cathedral however, isn't, and contains Napoleon's baptismal font. Napoleon's family home is now, of course, a museum. Other museums include the Musee a Bandera exploring the history of Corsica and the Palais Fesch for must-see Italian art.

Weather in Ajaccio

Average sunshine per day throughout the year is 7.5 hours, which tells you all you need to know about the climate: sunny and hot during the summer; sunny and mild during the winter. Average max temps during the summer are around 27-28°C, with winter seeing 13-14°C. Most of the rain falls in October and November.

Travel to Ajaccio

Most flight carriers service Bastia in the far north of the island, 75 miles away, but EasyJet does fly directly to Ajaccio from the UK. Otherwise, a connection will have to be made via another European airport. For non-direct flights, Figari is also an option at 80 miles away. Driving is actually an option thanks to the ferries from the French mainland, Nice, Toulon and Marseille all offering options directly into Ajaccio's ferry port, though driving all the way through France does take a couple of days.

Nice apartment with great views in quiet part of Ajaccio

4 of 5
The apartment was better than described. It was a good size with a nice modern kitchen, lots of storage and a big balcony with lovely view out to the bay. The location was good, outside the bustle of the main streets but only a 5 min walk down to the main street, Old Town and Port. It does involve walking up stairs or steepish roads to get back to the apartment so not ideal for people with mobility issues. Onsite parking is a huge bonus and a car is a must for this area. Only issue was check out as we couldn't get hold of owner, so were a bit unsure what to do with the keys, all other communication was good. We had a great stay and would definitely recommend to other travellers.
