A perfect mix of coast and countryside

4 of 5
A wonderfully picturesque and interesting part of France, this corner of Pays Basques is a perfect mix of coast and mountain countryside/tourist areas and places off the beaten track. There are fantastic views of the Pyrenees from this large house which, while not modern in decor, had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We were four older adults and two dogs, but this property would equally suit two families and would be ideal for children. The very friendly Fabienne and Patxie welcomed us and saw us on our way. Loads of things to do within easy driving distance - coast to the west, pretty countryside to the east and mountains and Spain to the south. We had an easy trip to Bilbao and the fantastic Guggenheim art gallery. San Sebastian was as dramatic with its waves breaking over the promenade and as good a centre for foodies as it is reputed to be. Biarritz is pretty and sophisticated, St Jean de Luz is friendly and less formal. St Jean Pied de Port is full of Basque history. There are pretty villages all around. Espelette is famous as the centre for the area's pimento 'industry' and has several good restaurants. All the beaches are sandy and perfect for children and young and old who want to play or just sit and enjoy the sea. Some of the less accessible ones are almost deserted and lovely for picnics. All in all a really great place for a holiday. But do remember that there is a reason that the countryside is so lush and green - sometimes it rains!

Wow, what a view! Oh and comfortable gite in old barn with modern interior too.

Remote location in a quiet mountainous environment 5 minutes from ventas where you can get everything you need and only 15 minutes from all activities in historic St Jean Pied de Port. Despite the heatwave we enjoyed daily short walks and went over the col into Spain. We always enjoyed coming back to the gite despite the tortuous/exciting access road! The large balcony was so relaxing in the shade although there was plenty of room for sunbathing in cooler weather. We spent every evening watching the hawks soaring and other birds in the woods below. The owners were very kind, providing a fan to keep us cool, and they are knowledgeable about the area with walking guide books provided.
