Make a holiday rental house or cabin in Lapland your home away from home

Lapland is a magical land of snow high in the Arctic Circle of Finland. The stunning, silent white landscape of hills carpeted in snow laden trees cannot fail to endear adults and thrill children, especially as the insinuation of Father Christmas is never far on Lapland holidays when children are present. But Lapland holidays are not just magic for children; summer or winter, trips to Lapland are the most incredible way to escape, relax and get back to nature.

Things to do in Lapland

Many families take Lapland holidays during the winter as the ultimate Christmas break. A snow covered Lapland log cabin could not be a more special place to spend Christmas, especially as you will never go for long without seeing some of the millions of beautiful reindeer in Lapland. There are many ways to tour the region during the winter, whether on cross country skis, skidoo, husky sled or, the most popular way to travel during a winter holiday in Lapland, by reindeer drawn sleigh.

As a winter sports destination, Lapland is virtually unheard of, but that is certainly not to say that the skiing and snowboarding in Lapland is not of the highest quality. Snow is guaranteed from December until April, queues are non-existent and the thought of crowded slopes is almost laughable. Whether you are completely new to skiing or a seasoned expert, you will never have had an experience like a skiing trip to Lapland. The wonderfully fluffy, dry snow is a treat to ski, and snowboarders, skiers and cross-country skiers have no end of route possibilities. There are some excellent ski schools to visit, and the resorts of Levi, Luosto, Ruka, Salla and Yllas will extend the warmest welcome you have ever experienced.

In summer, the region is completely different. Much of the snow has gone, but the reindeer in Lapland remain wandering free among the woods. Cycling and canoeing holidays are absolutely fantastic, and absolute peace abounds. Taking out a boat and a fishing rod is an absolute joy, with perch, trout and pike the most regular catches. You can even try gold-panning in the rivers, and let your Lapland holiday pay for itself!

Trips to Lapland are a real joy as the locals are astonishingly friendly. You will often be invited to sit around a large fire in the evening, enjoying a drink, a little food and a great night’s entertainment. You may even be able to enjoy a smoke sauna.

Places to visit on holiday in Lapland

Levi is one of the best places to take a skiing holiday in Lapland. Cross country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding holidays are fantastic and there are plenty of ski schools should you need it. The huge, wide slopes are perfect for learners whilst anyone wishing to try cross-country skiing, there are 230km of trails to take. There are also a half pipe, snow park and a great range of children’s slopes.

Weather in Lapland

The summers are surprisingly warm in Lapland, with daily temperatures often reaching up to around 20˚C, and the days are staggeringly long, with sensational sunsets as the sun just skims the horizon. The winters are obviously cold, dipping as far as -30˚C at times.

Travel to Lapland

Kittila Airport is a tiny airport in Lapland, and receives regular flights from the Helsinki on Finnair. The trip to Lapland is well worth taking at any time of year.

Lovely, traditional property, quiet and peaceful. Would recommend

We actually stayed here a couple of years ago but I realised I didn’t leave a review. Lovely property. We stayed here out of season in June, it was very quiet and peaceful but that’s what we like. Nice area, we found things to do, walking, hiring bikes. We saw lots of reindeer roaming around in the area. The owners have made it lovely for families with lots of nice little touches, games, dvd - my kids particularly loved the sit-on rocking reindeer. Great facilities in the house. Really friendly, helpful owner. The only thing I would suggest is maybe some blackout curtains for upstairs. We wanted to experience the midnight sun, which we did and it was unbelievable but so confusing when you wake up in the middle of the night not having a clue what time it is! (We also stayed at a property in Helsinki which didn’t have them either so maybe it is not a problem for locals!) All in all, a lovely place which I would recommend. Would be lovely to visit in the winter as well!

Christmas in Wonderland

5 of 5
We really enjoyed the cabin, it was well equipped and spacious. Things that I loved that I think were rare were the sharp knives and a supply of essentials like Salt, pepper, cling film etc. It was beautifully clearance and the setting was quiet and magical. If I had to pick something I would improve it would be storage for clothes, otherwise I can't wait to return, hopefully in a couple of years.
