Make a holiday home in Zealand your home away from home

The Danish island of Zealand (or Seeland) attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to admire its tranquil fjords and lakes while wandering through dense forests. Zealand is also shrouded in Norse folklore, known as the piece of land the goddess Gefjun forked out of Sweden after deceiving Gylfi the king of Sweden. Add to this the wealth of well-preserved historic buildings on Denmark’s largest island and you have enough reasons to rent a holiday home in Zealand and make it your destination of choice. The range of housing options HomeAway provides holidaymakers is nothing short of amazing; lovely bungalows with spacious compounds, villas furnished according to the latest decor trends and apartments with parking. Holiday rentals in Zealand are also available in the form of cottages and chateaux. A number of these have Internet access, satellite/cable TV and swimming pools.

Things to do

-Museum: Even those who are not certified history geeks will want to visit the Open Air Museum to see how the Danes of yore used to live. Thanks to the exhibits displayed in the fields one can get an idea of what life was like there between the 1600s and 1900s. Visitors can walk in and out of original farmhouses and view implements used in daily routines. Those who tour the west of Zealand will be able to see original Viking ships with their own eyes as well as the shipyard where ships are still made.

-Nature parks: Zealand is abundant in natural beauty, being home to a number of nature parks as well as open green spaces where people can just relax or take a quiet stroll. The Boserup Forest in the town of Roskilde is composed mainly of beech trees and its floor is a vivid mix of multicoloured Danish anemones. Among the public parks where those staying in Zealand holiday rentals can take peaceful promenades is Folkepark. In Bypark, children will be able to enjoy a spacious playground.

-Roskilde Festival: The raucous Roskilde Festival draws thousands of rock ‘n’ roll enthusiasts to the west of Zealand every year. It has been celebrated for over 40 years now and is based on the legendary Woodstock Festival. Given the fact that audiences range in the hundreds of thousands, the space is enormous. It is held between June and July.

-Sightseeing: One of the most anticipated activities of any visit to Zealand is the canoe trip on the calm waters of the Susaen stream which divides the island right in the middle, revealing some of the most stunning scenery one will ever see. The 80km course will take visitors 3 days to accomplish and they will love every inch of it. Residents of Zealand holiday homes who would like to see how ancient Denmark looked can pay a visit to the medieval town of Elsinore which is one of the best preserved in the country.

Weather in Zealand

This locale enjoys temperate conditions that tend towards the cooler side, given the country’s location towards the northern reaches of Europe. Tourists intent on a stay in Zealand holiday homes during summer will enjoy the cream of the weather there as temperatures hover between 20 and 22°C between June and August. This also happens to be the wettest time of the year but the rainfall is not much; monthly averages stay under 40mm.

Travel to Zealand

The Roskilde Airport, also known as the Copenhagen Airport, Roskilde, is usually most visitors’ first stop in Denmark. It is busy, especially in summer, with airport taxis to other islands. Visitors can get direct flights from almost anywhere in Europe to the Kastrup or Copenhagen Airport which is the country’s main international gateway. It handles both regular commercial and seasonal traffic.

Great property, walking distance to just about everything.

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay here. Spacious, light apartment with everything you'd need. We ate out all the time just because of circumstances, but we found the market (up to the main road and across) which would have everything you could possibly want, as well as a little supermarket a few doors down. This is a very convenient spot, we walked to everywhere while we were there. The only flag I'd raise for people is that this is really an apartment for 2 adults and children. We were fortunate as although our daughter is an adult, she is vertically challenged and so fitted the child-size beds...just! Adults just wouldn't be able to manage. But I'd say that as a luxury pad for two adults who would cook while they were there, this is still a good price - eating out is ferociously expensive and what you'd save on that would go a long way towards paying the rent!

Exellent apartment in a great location

The apartment was spacious and well-appointed. It is located about 15 minutes walk from the Tivoli gardens, in a relatively quiet area with lots of cafes and a handy supermarket nearby.
