  • Lovely peaceful location

We stayed here in a party of 11 adults. There are a lot of wonderful things about this property and also a few things that could make it even better, or that people should know before they book. We wanted a base for exploring the area and the location is wonderful, peaceful and quiet, but with supermarkets and other facilities close by. The downstairs rooms and garden of the property are beautiful, with plenty of room for all our party to sit and eat together. The large table sat 11 comfortably. All bedrooms are not created equal! And this gave us a problem, as we were sharing costs equally. Two of them are in an annex across the yard and one of these - which we didn't use - had no opening windows (it was very hot while we were there). The remaining bedrooms ranged from a huge double to a couple of beds squeezed into a downstairs office or a small child size room. We ended up drawing lots to decide who got which room. The bath/shower rooms in the main house were OK and clean enough, but the one in the annex was a bit grim. A word about bed linen - the booking confirmation told us that we had to bring our own. I queried this as we have rented properties around the world and had never had to do that before. Besides, we were arriving by air, did not want the extra luggage and had no idea what the bed sizes were. Luckily the agent quickly agreed to supply linen and towel packs as an exception to their usual rules. It was a little disconcerting to find the house full of 'stuff'. A tasteful display of books and records is one thing but cosmetics in the bathroom, bags of clothes and videos on the bedroom floors and food in the freezer is too much. Top end rental properties (and this one could really be fantastic) should be clear of clutter. New mattress covers and pillows are also needed. We would also have liked wardrobe space, bedside tables and lights and blinds/curtains for everyone. The house could do with a welcome book of instructions to reassure visitors that they've come to the right place, explain things like keys, wifi, the best place to get a mobile phone signal, and the existence and location of the annex (which has an great table tennis table!) The owner was very nice and we are very grateful to him for his help with a health emergency (SJS!). We wish him all the best in developing this lovely and historic property.
