Make a self catering villa or holiday rental in the Nicosia Region, Cyprus your home away from home

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is the only remaining divided city. The Turkish north and the Greek south sectors of Nicosia are divided by the “Green line” which separates the Republic of Northern Cyprus from South Cyprus. The Nicosia region is in the centre of the island, in the Mesaoria Plain, flanked by the Kyrenia Mountains with the iconic “Pentadaktylos” or five-fingered mountain.

Things to Do in the Nicosia Region

Many visitors to the Nicosia region enjoy the local shopping in Nicosia. The churches and historic architecture are also interesting to visit, either independently or as part of an organized guided walking tour. Visit the small workshops where artisans practice their trades. The museums and art galleries have a fine collection of historic exhibits and art works. The most popular sights are the Lefkosia Jewellery Museum, the Museum of Cypriot Coinage and the Municipal Arts Centre. The main Cyprus Museum has a fine collection of treasures dating back to the Neolithic age. Beyond the old city is the newer part of Nicosia with a cosmopolitan centre to rival any European city with a selection of nightclubs, bars and restaurants for evening entertainment. In the surrounding hills, walking, cycling, horseriding and other outdoor pursuits can all be enjoyed by visitors from their holiday home in the Nicosia region.

Places to Visit in the Nicosia Region

Exploring the old city of Nicosia from your holiday home in the Nicosia region is a must. The thick ramparts which encircle the city were built by the Venetians in 1570. They stretch for 5km and have three gateways and eleven towers. Strolling through this city is a step back in time with its narrow shady streets and balconied houses. The Selima Mosque, formerly known as the St Sophia Cathedral, is well worth a visit, but first visitors must remove their shoes and wash their feet. Beyond the city the rural side of the Nicosia region is in sharp contrast. The lovely Troodos Mountains offers beautiful scenery, pine, oak and cedar forests, hot springs wild orchids and small villages. The Skali Theatre is a bar and entertainment area built inside caves in Northern Cyprus.

Weather in the Nicosia Region

The Nicosia region has hot dry summers, averaging 35°C (95°F) in July and August, and pleasant mild winters of 17-19°C (63-66°F), with some showers between November and April.

Travel to the Nicosia Region

Cyprus’s main international airport is Larnaca (LCA) which is 50km (31 miles) from Nicosia. Ercan Airport (ECN) in North Cyprus is also very convenient, especially for those staying at holiday rentals in the Nicosia region on the north side of the border. However flights to Ercan have to touch down first on the Turkish mainland as only Turkey officially recognizes the Republic of North Cyprus.

Lovely, relaxing 10 days in a beautiful villa

5 of 5
The villa itself is brilliantly equipped with everything and more you could wish for - a spacious kitchen; air-con in all bedrooms; fast wi-fi which even worked outdoors; a useful mobile phone was provided to make restaurant reservations etc; and even a George Foreman grill to fry some halloumi! But it was the outside space which really stole the show. The pool is a lovely size and a nice temperature for cooling off. There are plenty of sun-loungers so there's no fighting for space, with many umbrellas to shield the sun in the heat of the day. And there are various great places to eat or have a drink outside, especially under the permanent gazebo. As non-cat lovers, we were a little bit worried when we saw a few kittens roaming around, but by the end of the holiday we were completely besotted by them and very sad to say goodbye! The location, too, was excellent - we didn't hire a car and never regretted it once. A large supermarket is in easy walking distance and we really made use of the 'dolmus' (minibuses which go up and down the main roads) which are very frequent and cheap. We went to three different beaches during our 10 days. None were more than a 15 minute dolmus ride away and our favourite was the quieter 'Shayna beach' which has a simply amazing fish restaurant above it which serves stunning fresh fish meze for extraordinarily cheap prices (55 Lira). Other restaurants we would recommend include Bella Moon (Bellapais, with a free taxi service to and from), Niaze's (Girne harbour), and Kybele (a little bit more expensive but in an incredible location in the Abbey's grounds, and again with a free taxi service to and from). And to top it all off, there was Cathy. Cathy made the booking process so simple (booking us a transfer to and from the airport), took us shopping on our first day, gave us invaluable recommendations and advice, and even took us to her favourite beach (which proved to be ours as well) - she was simply amazing and made our stay in Cyprus all the more enjoyable.

Villa was exactly as advertised. Well equipped and spacious. Excellent value for money.

Although a little remote there are restaurants to be found only short drives away from the villa. Beautiful view of the small harbour of Pomos from the pool area and decking that was difficult to tire of. We could not fault the service provided by the owner. If there was anything we could comment on to further improve the experience it would be consideration to install air con in the main lounge area. It would also be useful to have an option on a welcome pack of some basics (bread, milk, etc) as many flights land late in the evening into Paphos.
