Make a holiday rental house or apartment in Split area, Croatia your home away from home

Croatia’s second largest city, Split, is the main city of Dalmatia, and is a rich historical centre with a delightful atmosphere. Split is a beautiful city, famous for not only its stunning skyline and wealth of places of interest, but also its sailing and numerous provisions for water sports. Split has a huge amount to offer visitors, and if you are going to get a hire car, Split is also a perfect place to explore the unrivalled attractions of Dalmatia.

Things to do on holiday in Split, Croatia

Split’s most visited sight, the Diocletian’s Palace, is an essential place to visit from a Split holiday rental. It is magnificently preserved, with extra buildings or extensions from throughout the cities history, providing a single monument to every era of the cities past. There are so many different facets to the Palace, influenced by different designers, styles and eras, that visiting the palace, cathedral, town hall and museum which it incorporates will certainly take a few hours. Many of the best museums, galleries and theatres can be found within the walls of the Diocletian’s Palace, making it the genuine cultural heart of Split.

Taking holiday accommodation in Split means you will have to pack a beach towel too. The city currently holds three European Blue Flags for its three main beaches, the ACI Marina, Bacvice Beach and Split’s Hotel Beach.

The International Festival of New Film is held in Split annually, where new, innovative and experimental get an international audience. The festival is great fun, and if you are lucky enough to be able to find any holiday accommodation in Split for the week, you will not be disappointed. Lasting from mid July until mid August, the Festival of Contemporary Arts hosts many music, theatre, comedy and arts performances which take over the streets and attract visitors from across the globe to take up residence in self catering Split accommodation.

Sailors and boat enthusiasts will probably already know about Split. The city is renowned far and wide for the quality (and sheer quantity) of ports and marinas. Boasting over 40 marinas in the city, there is no shortage of facilities or opportunities to take to the seas of the Dalmatian Coast and discover some of the famous Dalmatian Islands.

Split is the gateway to the Dalmatian Islands, and the nearby town of Trogir is the perfect base to start island hopping. Connected by bridge to the island of Ciovo, Trogir is one of the most beautiful settlements you are likely to find for many, many miles. It is an ancient town with a breathtaking skyline, especially in the evening light. Of the best destinations in Ciovo, the village of Okrug Gornji is famed for its beautiful beaches, stunning caves and peaceful, family holidays to Croatia.

Slightly further along the coast is the delightful village of Promanja; a peaceful yet well catered for settlement on the beach. Whilst it is a very peaceful location for a Split holiday rental, there are excellent facilities for a range of water sports and many miles of walking and cycling trails.

Split has a very warm climate, and snow is very rare indeed. During July and August, average daily temperatures are around 32°C, and winters are extremely mild, never averaging below 10°C.

Really enjoyable

4 of 5
We had a really lovely 2 week stay here in Podstrana. The appartment was very spacious and very well equipped. Our hostess Marija was on hand if needed. The views from all 3 balconies were fabulous and we enjoyed numerous evenings having supper on one of them and watching the sunset. Take beach towels! It is a tough walk back up the road from the main road so we would say a car is necessary. There are numerous restaurants the short drive away and great little fast food stalls close to the nearest beach. There is a small supermarket at the bottom of the road. It is a good jumping off point for hill walking and cycling. Access to fabulous walks and spectacular scenery is on the doorstep. It is very convenient to Split and there are good bus links to Split and neighbouring towns along the coast. Overall it was very enjoyable.

Home from home by the sea

5 of 5
We loved staying in Frane's comfortable, well-equipped apartment in Stobrec. It's a short walk down steps to a warm, azure sea for swimming and sunbathing, while the nearby main beach down a gentle hill to Stobrec has a wide shallow bay where we enjoyed learning to paddle-board. There are plenty of great value restaurants nearby - we especially recommend the Epetium. A slight disappointment that there were no soft-ice-cream shops in Stobrec, which is one of the things we look forward to in Croatia - but at least we found some in Split. Stobrec's a nice size for walking around, and there are regular buses to Split. On a hot day, it was nice to walk by the river towards the hills. Frane was the best of hosts, answering questions beforehand, transporting us to and from Split airport, organising a day-trip to Brac on his dad's boat, and generally friendly if we ever needed anything - and his English is excellent. Definitely recommended!
