Make a holiday apartment in San Cristóbal de la Laguna your home away from home

Holiday homes in San Cristóbal de la Laguna are in and around a lovely renaissance city in the north of Tenerife. The historic centre is UNESCO listed, with the oldest university in the Canary Islands and an abundance of churches. Easy to reach from the city are stunning natural beaches and the majestic volcanic landscapes for which Tenerife is famous.

Guests can choose from holiday apartments in San Cristóbal de la Laguna’s beautifully preserved centre, in lovely old buildings on charming old streets, or more modern accommodation on the fringe of the city, closer to beaches or the mountains. Rentals here are ideal for couples and smaller families, and many offer domestic comforts in the form of satellite TV and internet access. To broaden the search, take a look at HomeAway’s choice of holiday apartments in Santa Cruz.

Things to do

-Local history: San Cristóbal de la Laguna was the original capital of Tenerife, and has been a university city for centuries. The historic centre here is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly because its renaissance layout was replicated throughout the New World from the 16th century onwards. The centre is full of beautiful stately ancestral homes like the House of the Corregidor and House of the Alhóndiga. There are also pretty churches, a convent and a lovely neo-gothic cathedral to seek out.

-Beaches: San Cristóbal de Laguna is inland, but some of Tenerife’s best beaches are accessible by car. West is El Bollullo, counted among the most unspoiled bays on the island. The sand here is black, and there are tall, rugged cliffs surrounding it. The only way to get there is by a track that winds through banana plantations. More touristy but no less beautiful is Playa de la Teresitas, which is a palm-edged bay of golden sand that arcs gently for a whole kilometre and sits beneath the Anaga Mountains.

-Outdoor activities: The city is on the edge of the beautiful wilderness of the Anaga Mountain range, which takes up Tenerife’s northeastern coast. By foot or bike this natural park offers a chance to see some of Tenerife’s most unfrequented places. Here there are peaks reaching heights of 1,000 metres, deep ravines, woodland, as well as remote mountain villages. The landscape on this peninsula is too rugged for a coastal road to encircle it, so some of the villages here are incredibly remote. To find a rental closer to this scenery, see our range of holiday homes in Tegueste.

-Natural sights: Taking up a great deal of Tenerife’s interior is the El Teide National Park, in the middle of which is the vast stratovolcano of the same name. The snow-capped peak of this landform stands 3,718 metres above sea level. It’s one of the island’s top attractions, with a cable-car serving its upper slopes. After arriving here it’s possible to continue up to the top of the volcano, or make for the two scenic lookouts for memorable views of the island.

-Day trips: San Cristóbal is a handy spot from which to discover the best of Tenerife’s northern coast. For those feeling inspired by this city’s historic centre, there are several beautiful old towns reachable by car, including La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos and La Garachico. All are characterised by stately homes, cobblestone streets and handsome old squares. Puerto de la Cruz is the main holiday resort, with visitor attractions to appeal to the whole family, such as the modern zoo, Loro Parque.

Weather in San Cristóbal de la Laguna

In this part of northern Tenerife the climate is Mediterranean. Here winters are damper and marginally cooler than on southern parts of the island. Most of the rain falls between October and April, and during this time daily highs range between 15 and 19?C. Visitors coming to a San Cristóbal de la Laguna holiday homes in the summer can expect warm and dry weather, with highs that get up to the mid-20s.

Travel to San Cristóbal de la Laguna

Use of a hire car is recommended for holidays here. San Cristóbal de la Laguna holiday apartments are very close to Tenerife North Airport (TFN). This destination is served by domestic Spanish flights and also has a few connections to European countries. Guests heading to Tenerife from the UK will need to use Tenerife South (TFS), which is around 63 kilometres from the town. The drive is simple—just follow the TF-1 up the eastern coast for 40 minutes or so.

simply lovely

5 of 5
This a true Diamond mounted in Tenerife. Martina and her husband were very kind and lovely hosts. The villa was not just clean but superbly clean and had a new feel though out. Their was plenty of linen and towels. Other people had talked about a smelly toilet and drain this was not a problem and has been fixed completely the garden is full of plants and flowers. The views just superb eye candy. Their is plenty to do walking and relaxing Porta-del-a-cruse is 1/2 an hour north and santa cruse 1/2 an hour south. The summit is an hour easy drive by car. We stoped in May and had a Wonderfull holiday. Glenn & Bernadine

A little bit disappointed

4 of 5
The property has been renovated to a high standard and provides an excellent base to walk in the local area. The owner left a very generous welcome package. Unfortunately some maintenance is required. Two door handles are missing, one held in place with blue Tack! The upstairs shower head hangs off and we ended up using the downstairs bathroom hich is accessed from outside - apologies to the neighbours. The kitchen was well equipped but a couple of essentials missing. The bedrooms are small with little space around the beds. Downstairs is a little dark with underpowered light bulbs. We enjoyed our stay, but would probably not return.
