Holiday homes in Puerto de la Cruz are primed for family getaways. The location is superb, next to one of Tenerife’s top resorts. Here there are magical beaches, exciting family attractions and golf courses to enjoy. The nature here is glorious too—there are volcanic landforms, sweeping valleys dotted with banana plantations, as well as the awe-inspiring peak of El Teide in the distance.

Almost all holiday apartments in Puerto de la Cruz offer access to a pool but are also within a few minutes of the ocean and several beaches, which gives guests plenty of flexibility when relaxation is the order of the day. Interiors are neatly appointed, with smart appliances like wi-fi and satellite TV provided. Most rentals have two bedrooms, which are ideal for new families. To broaden the search, the nearby resort of La Orotava also has plenty of holiday rentals.

Things to do

-Beaches: There are six beaches at Puerto de la Cruz, ranging in character and appearance. There’s a small one at the harbour in the heart of the town, and here the waters are remarkably calm. Martíanez is a gorgeous volcanic bay, with lively waters favoured by surfers. Playa Jardín is perhaps the most picturesque beach—it is lined with palm trees and has a large curve of dark sand where there are all the services and facilities required for a perfect day at the beach.

-Natural sights: Puerto de la Cruz is within the Orotava Valley, which is a stunning natural park full of ravines, cliffs, gullies and vibrant greenery. El Teide is almost always visible in the distance. This 3,718-metre-high volcano is the tallest landform in the whole of Spain. Visitors can take a cable car up most of the way to the top, and from there either scale the peak or take in the views from scenic lookouts.

-Golf: There are three courses on the northern side of Tenerife. The nearest is La Rosaleda, which is a nine-hole par 27 with gorgeous views of El Teide and the Orotava Valley. It’s ideal for newcomers or experienced players who want to work on their short game. Just over half an hour to the west of Puerto de la Cruz is Buenavista Golf, designed by Seve Ballesteros, while northeast is the prestigious Real Club de Golf de Tenerife.

-Cuisine: For those interested in sampling Tenerife’s cuisine, guachinches are the restaurants to visit, serving indigenous fare. Among the many dishes to try are fish casseroles and vegetable soups and stews. Salmorejo meanwhile is rabbit marinated in paprika, garlic and chilli, and then grilled. Another way to get to know Tenerife’s culture is to arrive in time for the Carnival in February, and stay at a holiday rental in Santa Cruz, the island’s capital.

-Family attractions: One of Tenerife’s most popular days out can be found in Puerto de la Cruz. Loro Parque is a zoo, originally oriented towards parrots and birdlife, but now containing a host of other animal species including gorillas, jaguars, giant tortoises, otters and alligators, while there are also demonstrations involving seals, dolphins and orcas.

Weather conditions on Tenerife are springlike throughout the year. This is due to the island’s position, not far north of the Tropic of Cancer, and in line with winds that blow from North Africa and across the Atlantic from the Caribbean. Puerto de la Cruz holiday apartments are on Tenerife’s northern coast, which is known for being lusher than other parts of the island due to increased rainfall. Almost all of this rain occurs in the winter, between November and March. Daily temperatures at this time of year peak at 18?C, while the rest of the year gets consistent highs that hover around 23?C.

Travel to Puerto de la Cruz

The closest airport to Puerto de la Cruz holiday homes is Tenerife North (TFN), which is 20 minutes away and has links to mainland Spain and other European destinations. Holidaymakers from the UK will need to use Tenerife South (TFS), which is about 90 kilometres away on the south side of the island. This airport has a host of flight connections to the UK, generally with low-cost airlines. Use of a car is recommended—the drive to Puerto de la Cruz from Tenerife South will take around an hour on the TF-1 and TF-5 roads.

Fabulous Apartment near Puerto de la Cruz

This apartment gave us everything we could have asked for. It's in the great location of Punta Brava - about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. For the physically challenged - the apartment is at the top of a hill where there are beautiful views. A couple of evenings we weren't up to the climb back, after we had been walking all day in the mountains, so we just parked our car at the bottom and drove back after our evening out - it's literally 2-3 minutes drive back up to park in the underground garage that is provided - or you can take a taxi for around 3 - 4 Euros from both Punta Brava and Puerto de la Cruz. When we first arrived and had a walk around Punta Brava we weren't sure it was the sort of place we would want to eat / drink etc. as it is not a tourist "hot spot", more a lovely local village - but how wrong we were - going to the bars and drinking with the locals was great entertainment - and there are some fantastic restaurants - our favourite was Rincon Del Mar - very quirky decor and the owner couldn't do enough - go for the paella or the house special a sort of fish stew - you won't be disappointed! The apartment was spotlessly clean and so well equipped - probably one of the best we have ever rented. As well as the kitchen equipment, all the day to day essentials needed for the full 2 week stay, washing up liquid, cleaning products, toilet rolls, etc were provided. Lots of good quality towels for bathroom and pool/beach. Spare bedding etc and on arrival a carton of milk and bottled water so that we could make a cup of tea without having to find the local shops. The shopping experience is always part of our holiday - buying locally grown and produced goods. The Lidl supermarket is less than 5 minutes by car and can provide just about everything - but don't forget the small local supermarkets that sell freshly made bread etc. The heated pool is beautiful and also kept spotlessly clean – sunbeds are provided. It was great to relax there after a long day walking and listen to the seals, parrots and occasionally the chimpanzees in Lora Parque which is just down the road. Highly recommended for a base to explore the beautiful North Tenerife.
