Things to do

-Beaches: A little off the tourist trail is El Bollullo, a beach accessed only via dirt track. It’s a beautiful bay, 400 metres long and enclosed by rugged cliffs. Unlike some beaches on the island that have artificial sands, this beach has fine volcanic particles, a remarkable sight for the uninitiated. Just as scenic is Los Patos, which is even longer, stretching out for a kilometre and with no sign of tourist development to be seen. Also known for its rugged coast is Tacoronte.

-Nature: La Orotava is part of the large valley of the same name. This is considered one of the most scenic places on the whole of the island—the valley is 10-by-11 kilometres with a landscape of banana plantations, gullies, cliffs and gorges. This is a fine spot to explore on foot or by bike. In the distance is the iconic El Teide, Spain’s highest peak. This stratovolcano can be scaled via cable car, and the most daring visitors can even climb to the peak by prior arrangement.

-Day trips: There’s much to see within a short car trip of La Orotava. West are lovely old towns like Icod de los Vinos and Garachico, which have managed to keep their historic centres perfectly preserved. Move on from there to the western tip of Tenerife and behold the imposing beauty of the Macizo de Teno, where there are dramatic volcanic cliffs and caves.

-Golf: The north coast of Tenerife has three fantastic golf courses, all of which are within 45 minutes by car. The closest to La Orotava is La Rosaleda, which is great for families as it’s a nine-hole course aimed mainly at newcomers to the sport. Serious players could go west to Buenavista or east to Real Club de Golf de Tenerife for high-end 18-hole courses in inspiring volcanic landscapes.

-Family attractions: This is a good spot for families with kids in tow, as two of Tenerife’s top attractions will be effortlessly close. Across in Puerto de la Cruz is Loro Parque, where visitors can admire a host of animal species, from jaguars to giant tortoises. Right here in La Orotava meanwhile is PuebloChico Tenerife, with scale models of all of the Canary Islands’ top landscapes and buildings.

Weather in La Orotava

Springlike conditions will be in store no matter the time of year that guests come to a La Orotava holiday home. The period from November to March is a little cooler and wetter. In this season there are daily highs in the upper-teens and occasional rainfall. The summer though is almost always dry on Tenerife. Temperatures reach 24?C by day, and there’s abundant sunshine from April to October.

Travel to La Orotava

For holidaymakers travelling from the UK the main way to get to La Orotava apartments will be to use Tenerife South Airport (TFS). This airport handles lots of flight routes from the UK, mostly with budget and charter airlines. After arriving the easiest way to reach La Orotava will be by car. The drive takes about an hour on the TF-1 and TF-5. The island’s other airport, Tenerife North (TFN) is closer, but is served mostly by domestic Spanish traffic.

Fabulous Apartment near Puerto de la Cruz

This apartment gave us everything we could have asked for. It's in the great location of Punta Brava - about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. For the physically challenged - the apartment is at the top of a hill where there are beautiful views. A couple of evenings we weren't up to the climb back, after we had been walking all day in the mountains, so we just parked our car at the bottom and drove back after our evening out - it's literally 2-3 minutes drive back up to park in the underground garage that is provided - or you can take a taxi for around 3 - 4 Euros from both Punta Brava and Puerto de la Cruz. When we first arrived and had a walk around Punta Brava we weren't sure it was the sort of place we would want to eat / drink etc. as it is not a tourist "hot spot", more a lovely local village - but how wrong we were - going to the bars and drinking with the locals was great entertainment - and there are some fantastic restaurants - our favourite was Rincon Del Mar - very quirky decor and the owner couldn't do enough - go for the paella or the house special a sort of fish stew - you won't be disappointed! The apartment was spotlessly clean and so well equipped - probably one of the best we have ever rented. As well as the kitchen equipment, all the day to day essentials needed for the full 2 week stay, washing up liquid, cleaning products, toilet rolls, etc were provided. Lots of good quality towels for bathroom and pool/beach. Spare bedding etc and on arrival a carton of milk and bottled water so that we could make a cup of tea without having to find the local shops. The shopping experience is always part of our holiday - buying locally grown and produced goods. The Lidl supermarket is less than 5 minutes by car and can provide just about everything - but don't forget the small local supermarkets that sell freshly made bread etc. The heated pool is beautiful and also kept spotlessly clean – sunbeds are provided. It was great to relax there after a long day walking and listen to the seals, parrots and occasionally the chimpanzees in Lora Parque which is just down the road. Highly recommended for a base to explore the beautiful North Tenerife.

Our stay in cottage Juanita was comfortable and so well equipped that we had everything at our fingertips, including a washing machine!!!! Ted went out of his way to make our stay stress free and comfortable. Would return many times over...
