The National Park of Serra da Canastra and the last remaining stretches of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in the Ribeira Valley and the Alto Ribeira Touristic State Park are home to over 400 species of birds, as well as some remarkable mammal, reptile and amphibian species. Bird watching holidays are some of the most popular, and with so many places in South East Brazil brimming with bird life, the sheer diversity, beauty and range of bird life may well surprise even the most experienced bird watchers.
The city of Rio de Janeiro, the ‘marvellous city’, is a huge attraction for tourists. Standing in the imposing shadow of internationally renowned Christ the Redeemer, Rio is always a haven of activity and excitement. The huge Carnival is globally famous as the largest in the world, attracting visitors from every corner of the globe for its infectious atmosphere. Rental accommodation in Rio de Janeiro is in incredibly high demand during the Carnival, and you may need to book a year or two in advance. The wait is certainly worth it though.
Buzios is the prime pure beach destination in South East Brazil. There are 20 magnificent beaches along the peninsula to choose from, with sparkling seas, beautiful landscapes and a delightful year round climate. This is a beach resort sculpted by nature, where you cannot fail to completely relax.
There are many different climatic zones in Brazil, and even the South East region does not enjoy a uniform climate. Rio has a fantastically warm climate, with little rain but frequent winds keeping the air fresh. Temperatures rarely rise above 32°C, with very little seasonal difference between summer and winter.
The main transport hubs in Brazil are Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, both of which are found in South East Brazil.
