The Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro is the breathtaking mountain region around Petropolis and Teresopolis. It begins about 50km north of the city of Rio and extends to the north and east.

As well as hiking, climbing and mountain biking, the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro is perfect for exploring on horseback. There are many horse farms offering treks through the Serra dos Orgaos National Park with a local guide where schlumbergera species of cactus grow wild. Sample the gourmet cuisine of the Itaipava district from your holiday rental within the Serrana region of the mountains or enjoy the bars and restaurants in the town of Areal for a taste of local culture.

Places to Visit Around the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro

The small community of Possession is within the district of Petropolis and has around 8,000 inhabitants. It is a very scenic region north of the Organ Mountains and is well worth driving to from your holiday rental in the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro. The scenic roads, mountain landscape and gushing waterfalls are beautiful to discover. The area is mainly agricultural with herb farms, trout lakes, snail breeders, mushroom production and organic farming. Teresopolis is famous for its jagged mountain peaks which attract climbers and hikers from all over the world. The most famous of these peaks is the Dedo de Deus, or “finger of God” although the highest is the Pedra do Sino (Bell Rock) at 2,263 metres. Teresopolis is also well known for its football school and matches.

Weather in the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro

Being in the southern hemisphere, Rio de Janeiro’s hottest month is January, when temperatures reach 29°C (85°F) or higher. The cooler, drier winter months from June to September reach a very pleasant 24°C (75°F) with nighttime lows around 17°C (63°F).

The rainy season in this area is from October to March although the mountains of the Serrana region may have higher rainfall at any time of year compared to the city and coast and temperatures are considerably cooler.

Travel to the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro

The nearest airport to holiday rentals in the Serrana region is Rio de Janeiro International (GIG) Airport, also known as the Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim (GIG) International Airport at Guanabara Bay. It has both international and domestic flights and is located about 20km (13 miles) north of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Air-conditioned buses and municipal taxis take tourists into the main areas of the city although a hire car is necessary to explore this scenic area.
