Make a holiday rental home or apartment in Bermuda your home away from home

One corner of the famous Bermuda Triangle, Bermuda is a collection of tiny islands that sit alone in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, over 1,000km away from the nearest landmass. The oldest remaining British overseas territory, Bermuda makes for a fascinating and relaxing holiday destination, with fabulous beaches of unique pink sand, breathtaking views and a laid-back atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in the world.

Things to do in Bermuda

With clear waters and soft pink sands, Bermuda is a prime destination for those seeking the ultimate beach holiday. The majority of the best and most popular beaches lie along the south shore of the island, and water sports, snorkelling and scuba diving can also be enjoyed along this picturesque stretch. Marley Beach, Elbow Beach and Horseshoe Beach are some of the premier destinations to consider for these activities.

There is more to see and do than the beaches, with some of the most popular tourist destinations in Bermuda including the Maritime Museum, the aquarium, the zoo, the Botanical Gardens and the Crystal Caves. Those seeking more relaxation can head to one of several health spas for a day of pampering.

Sports make up a key part of Bermudan life, and every effort should be made to watch a football or cricket match during a stay on the island. The annual cricket cup match between the parishes of Somerset and St. Georges is even a national holiday and a day of celebration. Bermuda also has a number of golf courses to enjoy, as well as a golf academy and driving range.

Places to visit on holiday in Bermuda

Bermuda consists of 138 islands that total just 53 square kilometres, making for great island-hopping. The largest island is known as Main Island, and is home to Hamilton, the capital city of Bermuda. Hamilton is also the main port, and a great place to start any vacation here. The city boasts several parks, shops (for buying those all-important Bermuda shorts!), a famous cathedral and is the country’s main business district.

The historic town of St. Georges is the largest town in the country, and contains many old buildings which also serve as bars, restaurants and shops. Other excellent base locations in Bermuda include the parish of Devonshire and Somerset Island.

Weather in Bermuda

Bermuda has a humid subtropical climate, with temperatures that reach towards 30C in the height of summer, and rarely drop below 16C in the ‘coldest’ months of winter. Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year, so any month could be regarded as a good month for a holiday in Bermuda.

Flights to Bermuda

Bermuda has just one airport, L. F. Wade International Airport (BDA), which is located in St. Georges. British Airways offer a direct route from London Gatwick. Though car rental is not an option in Bermuda, visitors can take public transport to get to their chose holiday rental accommodation.

Where Bermuda is Timeless

5 of 5
My wife and I together with another couple spent a glorious week at the Beach House to re-live our separate honeymoons 50 years ago. While the island has changed since 1966/67, the ambience of this property re-creates the lifestyle that we so enjoyed at the start of our marriages. The beach is wonderful in its privacy and its perfect sand and surf. It is only a minute’s walk down a grassy path to the stairway and the uniquely blue water. The house has that timeless feel of comfort, space and graciousness that reflects Bermuda’s allure. The earlier reviews don’t need to be repeated concerning the amenities and location of the house. Perhaps we can add some assurance about the service aspect of the experience. We had an issue with the phone line to the house likely caused by a lot of telecoms work being done for the America’s Cup. Gordon, the intrepid property manager, set up the repair and offered the wi-fi at his nearby office as internet access in a pinch. He then delivered a gift certificate from the owners for the Swizzle Inn to sooth any residual angst. Now that’s island grace. One location advantage not mentioned in earlier reviews is the access to Southlands beach, just to the east of Marley Beach by maybe 200 yards. It is broader than Marley and free of any exposed rocks in the water. The entry road is an abandoned driveway but it is a beach open to the public and as pretty as any on the south shore. For hikers, you can go across South Road and go up Rocklands Road to reach the RailTrail and enjoy ocean views and a non-tourist sense of island life as well as some leafy pathways. Some small steps towards perfection: plastic glasses don’t work for champagne toasts, some swim goggles might be nice, a second beach umbrella would accommodate two couples better. The minor nature of these improvements highlights the overall quality of the The Beach House.

Great stay

5 of 5
After spending a week in the Smith cottage (q.v.), we booked the apartment for a week. The view from the porch is exactly as shown in the photograph. We had morning coffee and often lunch there to enjoy looking over the harbor. Linda Hanafin is wonderful to work with -- helpful but not intrusive. She works very hard to insure a good experience for her guests, including outfitting the property with every convenience. We prepared dinner half the nights we stayed. Recommend Somers grocery in St. George for basics and, for fancier items (think Marks & Spencer food), the new supermarket on Front Street in Hamilton. Location of the apartment is super convenient -- post office for bus tickets is 50 feet, pharmacy 100 feet, choices of restaurants within a quarter of a mile. Tempest is our favorite for intersting menu and service, Wahoo for pub experience, and White Horse Tavern for wahoo salad. Also Yocherry for homemade ice cream. St. George bus terminal is a five-minute walk, and the bus to Hamilton takes just under an hour. A fifteen minute walk to Tobacco Bay beach. The art museums in Hamilton and at the Botanical Garden are worth a visit, also the acquarium/zoo in Flatts. We will be back, and all in all prefer the apartment to the cottage because of the layout of the living/dining rooms and the windows on three sides.
