Make a holiday apartment in Bruges your home away from home

HomeAway has a range of holiday homes and apartments in Bruges for you to browse, and you’ll be able to narrow down your hunt for the accommodation that best matches your taste, budget and plans. Bruges is a gorgeous historic city, encircled by a canal and protected today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with interesting and attractive sights. You might opt for a Bruges holiday home overlooking the canal, or an apartment with wooden beams and other historic features, right in the heart of the medieval centre. Of course, you can also choose the conveniences that you require at your ideal holiday accommodation in Bruges, from internet and washing machines, to parking spaces and gardens.

Things to do from your holiday apartment in Bruges

-Historical sights. The historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is little wonder given the fantastic state of preservation of the buildings here. The entire city is a joy, but it would be well worth seeing the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Gothic and Romanesque Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk and the medieval Hospital of St. John.

-Museums. There’s a range of interesting museums to visit in Bruges – the ChocoStory Museum is devoted to chocolate production, while for art lovers the Groenige Museum features a large collection of Flemish art from the 1300s to the present day. Other attractions worth seeing include the Fries Museum, devoted to chips, and the Diamond Museum.

-Dining. Bruges is a great place to sample hearty, traditional Belgian cuisine. Being so close to the coast one of the main specialities in this city is mussels with chips, served with mayonnaise. Belgian beer is also rightfully famous, especially the trappist varieties, while a popular dessert to try is waffles, served with whipped cream and melted chocolate.

-Shopping. In Bruges you’ll be able to find a host of shops specialising in the region’s famed lace, beer and chocolate. These range from artisanal chocolate shops offering bars of gourmet chocolate at high prices, to the lace school, where you can purchase locally-made lice items. There are also high-end beer shops where you can buy limited edition bottles.

-Canal tours. One of the essential experiences in Bruges is to take a trip along the city’s picturesque canals. You’ll be joined on the trip with guides offering fascinating insight about the history of the city, and by travelling along the waterways you’ll be able to visit some parts of Bruges not accessible on foot.

Weather in Bruges

On holiday in a Bruges apartment you can expect mild and relatively damp weather for most of the year. Summers are moderate, with daily highs in July and August peaking just a little way above 20 degrees, and occasional warm spells when temperatures rest around the mid-20s for a few days. Rainfall is not uncommon at this time of year. Winters are usually wetter and cool, but temperatures tend not to drop below freezing very often. Highs in December and January hover around five or six degrees.

Travel to Bruges

The closest international airport to Bruges is Ostend-Bruges (OST), which sits around 25 kilometres along the coast to the west and connects mainly with beach destinations on the southern Mediterranean. You can also reach holiday homes in Bruges via Brussels Airport (BRU). It’s around an hour away by road or rail, and has connections across Europe as well as some airports in North America. Meanwhile Bruges is a rail hub for Belgium’s coast, and there are a number of bus lines serving the city. The historical centre is small enough to get around by foot or bicycle.
