Flachau, Austria is a fantastic, year round resort that has yet to burst onto the British tourist market. Located in the mountains of Salzburgerland, Flachau lies in the Upper Ennstal Valley in the Central Alps. The town is a fantastic family destination throughout the year, and not only during the long ski season that Salzburgerland enjoys every year.

Things to do in Flachau, Austria

The Flachau ski resort is part of the huge Salzburger Sportwelt. The resort is famous for the great range of highly diverse, beautifully groomed pistes that surround the town. The skiing is perfect for intermediate skiers, although beginners are magnificently catered for too. There are in fact 860km of slopes across three valleys, so you should have no problems in finding a suitable challenge. Flachau has bred two world champions, including the legendary downhill skier, Herman Maier, and there is even a permanently timed run for those wishing to add a little competition to their skiing holiday.

Away from the slopes there are a huge range of winter activities to enjoy from a self catering Flachau holiday rental. Many of the summer hiking trails that have made Flachau a year round resort are open for winter hiking expeditions and snow shoe hiking, and you can find excellent facilities for snow tubing, tobogganing or ice skating.

The Flachau area is a magnificent destination for walking holidays during the summer months, taking you through thick pine forests, along stunning Alpine ridges and to incredibly picturesque alpine lakes which call out to you to have a blissfully refreshing swim. There is an extensive network of walking and mountains biking trails crossing the landscape, giving you almost endless possibilities for walking, from short, post-lunch strolls to the kind of hikes which may well require a high degree of mountaineering knowledge and ability. Information on the many routes and their suitability is available from the Flachau Tourist Offices. The many little lakes you pass as you walk are perfect for swimming in, and many have been designated as special swimming lakes of badsee, with facilities for changing and entry, but the more remote lakes will not be marked.

Away from the mountains peaks, a holiday rental in Flachau offers a great range of family activities too. The high ropes course is fantastic fun, providing both great challenges and spectacular views along the valley. The miniature golf course in Llachau provides endless hours of entertainment too, especially in the evenings when you wish to relax after a hard day of sport on the slopes.

Beautiful views to the valey, both inner and outside territhory gives full privacy experience, kidsfriendly. Just 25min with a car to my favourite Zauchensee ski paradise. The owner is very helpful, once our car got stuck in a snow (own fault) he send us help just within 20min, Amade therme (saunas, pools) is 7min drive. Fresh towels were brought in the middle of the week. Kitchen is fully equipped, great soundproof doors and walls (kids). There is even a bbq set outside with mountains view. And of course a fire place inside:)

Positives In general very positive impression nice/unproblematic contact with Belvilla and owners. Lots of space for evenings/integration of larger group of friends (huge dining room and big kitchen, nicely equiped). Easily reacheable ski lifts (car/bus, and even walking distance for apre-ski). Negatives house layout (graph) and more exact descripiton (in particular concerning the shared toilette/bathroom on the ground floor) would avoid some surprises on arrival. If available, this would allow for different planning/arrangement of the group. PK
