We - 1 adult and three children ages 12-16 - very much enjoyed our stay at Ocean Close in late January for 3 nights. The property suited our needs as a base for long days on the beach, in the estuary and exploring the river and township of Guilderton. We regularly popped in and out during the day for meals and chill time.
This is a family-run affair and we found the owners easy going and accommodating (we understand the house has been in the family since the 1960s, though it is now used only semi-regularly) including being relaxed on our arriving early and leaving late (this of course would depend on whether there are other bookings which are adjacent to your booking).
The location is opposite the beach (not many in Guilderton have beach front location) and even better, is only 1 minute walk to the beach path (at the bottom of Fraser St) with another 30s on to the beach itself. During our stay - January school holidays - this section of the beach, which is wide with perfect white sand - was entirely deserted ALL the time. It made for easy coming and going early mornings, during the day and evenings. The kids can roam safely back and forth without adult supervision. The north groyne (which also has an excellent family swimming beach on the south side) is only 5 mins walk. It's about a 10 minute walk up to the estuary mouth, either along the beach or via the road (Gordon Street).
The pricing of the property is 50% to 75% less than other houses closer to the caravan park/estuary and as such is excellent value for money if you are looking for an affordable base for a small family (suggest 2 adults and 3 kids).
The property is a unit style, located underneath the main house (when the father or the son's family are in town, they use the upstairs portion of the property, which has separate access to the downstairs). In the downstairs unit, there are two bedrooms (a double bed in one room and two singles in the other) and a large and spacious living/dining/kitchen area configured in a rectangular shape. The living area includes plenty of couch/chair seating, a large widescreen TV with digital channels, a blu ray player with discs and a 6-seater dining table. Off of the living area (with door) is a spacious area with shower, separate toilet and double sink. The living room couch is a sofa bed which can sleep 1 additional adult/older child or two 2 small children. Pillows and doonas are provided, but bring your own sheets and pillow cases.
