Long Beach is a renowned surfers’ paradise, but there is much more to this scenic locale than just the great breakers on Third Ramp. Not only are there many other outdoor activities for holidaymakers to busy themselves with, there is the perfect environment for them to get that well-earned R&R. The weather is nothing short of marvellous; continuously sunny skies excellent for sun bathers. Visitors will also discover many unique sites as they wander about the beach and venture inland. Among the accommodation options visitors to Long Beach can look forward to are beautiful beach houses big enough to house groups of various sizes.
Surfers who know their beaches make the pilgrimage to Long Beach every now and then to hone their skills or just to have fun. The beauty with the moderate breakers that are characteristic of this beach is that even those who have never laid eyes on a surf board can learn comfortably there. The breeze that sweeps across this coast is perfect for kite surfing as well. Another benefit of the mild currents is that even children can swim safely in the shallow waters off the coast. Among the other fun water sports popular here are canoeing and kayaking. Those who are willing can join the local yacht club for a regatta or sailing lessons. Those keen on angling will be spoilt for choice in terms of locations to fish from. They can fish off the jetty, from the rocks or get a boat from which to fish further from the shore.
But the 12 kilometres of sand the beach provides also offers myriad recreational opportunities. Visitors can promenade along them enjoying the gorgeous weather or challenge themselves by taking on the more demanding cliff walks or venture inland on rugged bush trails. Holidaymakers can also hire bicycles to take on these trails. A unique pastime on this beach is 4WD off-road driving along the coast.
Those with an interest in history or are just plain curious will want to visit the Cape Dombey Obelisk which was built in 1852. The 40 foot red and white structure was used in the past as a sort of beacon to guide ships. The Old Gaol, a male prison constructed in 1860 still stands there and has been recently restored by the government. A trip to the local wineries is also recommended as visitors will get to taste the excellent white and red wines produced there.
