Renting is best bet for an affordable city break

Rent a chic city apartment & enjoy more space for half the cost of a hotel

As shopping comparison site Kelkoo reveals Britons’ main priority when taking a city break is affordability, HomeAway Holiday-Rentals, the UK’s no.1 holiday rentals website, reports that when it comes to accommodation apartment rentals are one of the most cost-effective options for travellers. When comparing rental rates on to average daily hotel rates in 10 of the most popular European cities, the company found the price per square metre for a private rental works out around half the price of a hotel room, and sometimes even less*. Venice rentals offer the best value for money, with apartments there working out four times cheaper than hotels.

As the recession drags on, British travellers have become more cost-conscious than ever, with affordability a primary consideration when booking holidays. According to Kelkoo, almost 9 out of 10 people (87%) claim prices at the destination are the most important factor, while 86% deem the cost of accommodation to be key**. The reasonable cost, combined with the additional value rentals provide in terms of more space, privacy and kitchen facilities, make them the perfect option for those looking for an affordable holiday.

Kelkoo also points out that Eurozone cities have become more affordable again during recent months due to the strengthening of the pound, so travellers now have 18% more spending power than 18 months ago. Lisbon and Barcelona are highlighted as particularly favourable destinations, with many of the attributes UK travellers look for in an ideal city break. As well as a good exchange rate they are easy to get to and have great weather. found that apartment rentals in Lisbon work out on average 58% less, and in Barcelona 64% less than hotels.
