The 4th country on the Grantourismo map after Morocco was Spain, where Lara and Terry stayed from the end of February to mid-March. Even though Spain is an established holiday favourite with us Brits, its varied landscape, culture and heritage still offer us something different to discover on every trip. To combine both old and new, as well as a tourist favourite with an off-the-beaten track spot, the choices for this leg of their trip were Jerez and Barcelona. Due to some unexpected circumstances, they also made a pitstop in Madrid, in the hip Malasaña neighbourhood.

One of Lara and Terry's favourite cities, Madrid, was not initially on the Grantourismo itinerary. So an unexpected one-night stopover in Spain's vibrant capital came as a stroke of good luck! With the help of Gabriel, the owner of this chic apartment in Madrid
, Lara and Terry headed out for a quintessential ‘local’ experience comprising a tour of atmospheric tapas bars, Mercado de San Miguel - Madrid's newly renovated market, and finally a rustic cave bar - Meson del Champiñones. Read more about Lara and Terry's one night stopover in Madrid
After their one-night experience in Madrid, Lara and Terry finally arrived in Jerez
, a small, charming city in Spain’s southern province of Cadiz. Famous for its flamenco, horses and sherry, the city offers the perfect off-the-beaten track experience, with few tourists wandering its wonderful pedestrian streets compared to its Andalucian neighbours of Seville, Granada and Cordoba. Luckily enough, Lara and Terry arrived just in time to witness the city’s celebrated flamenco festival
, which for the people of Jerez is truly a way of life. So what better way to get beneath the skin of the city?!
As the famous Andalucian horses are also among the city's icons, Lara and Terry headed to Jerez’s Equestrian School
to watch the dance of these magnificent animals and find out more about what makes this city so special
from Belen, the only woman among the 17 professional horse riders at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Finally, a sherry tasting was also a must, but even though the city boasts many bodegas, Lara and Terry decided to do their own
, which they live-tweeted on Twitter

A blend of old and new, the capital of Catalonia is a "creative, cosmopolitan and magical" city, according to Sergio
, a 28 year-old Barcelona local. There are many ways of discovering the city
, whether it is a Barcelona card with guidebook, or a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour. However, instead of heading to the city's main landmarks, Lara and Terry decided to avoid the tourist traps and explore Barcelona's best off the beaten track neighbourhoods
, including Gràcia, their ‘home’ for two weeks in the city.
Barcelona is also one of the best foodie destinations in the world, due to its contemporary Catalan cuisine and fresh local markets. So for food lovers, Lara and Terry offer their tips and advice on some of Barcelona's best restaurants
, including Cinc Sentits, the restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Jordi Artal, who even showed Terry how to cook an 'Afternoon Chocolate Delight'
. But the best way to live like a local in Barcelona is to simply stroll through the markets
and listen to the shoppers chatting, gossiping or interrogating the merchants about their various products!
