Marrackech's magical medina & a weekend escape to Essaouira

MoroccoMain.jpg One of Lara and Terry's first destinations, Morocco, was a must on the Grantourismo map due to its undisputable charm and rich local culture. Their quest to discover Moroccan life started in the buzzing medina of Marrakech, with its enchanting atmosphere and souks. Their desire to experience a slower pace also led them to Essaouira, a small fishing town on the Atlantic Coast. During their time in Morocco, Lara and Terry provided an insight in to local life by sharing their stories of the music, markets and traditional cuisine they discovered along their way.

Marrakech

Lara and Terry arrived in Marrakech on Valentines Day at Dar Rocmarra, a beautifully restored Riad ideally situated within the ancient medina, which provided the perfect base to explore this charming city. For couples they produced an evocative multimedia review of one of the most romantic restaurants in the medina, Dar Yarcout. They also explored the colourful local markets and souks, picking up the rhythm of daily life as they observed the locals go about their everday business.

As Marrakech is a city of contrasts, if you really want to get beneath the skin of the city, then its great to ask a local for their tips. Jamila, the manager, housekeeper and chef at Dar Rocmarra, who was born and brought up in the Kasbah of Marrakech, shared her advice with the Grantourismo team. Alternatively, for the traditional, and essential tourist experience take a shopping-themed walking tour with Lara, and before leaving make sure to check her shopping list to get a basic idea about what things cost.

Essaouira

An easy weekend escape from Marrakech, Essaouira is a must for a truly memorable Moroccan experience. After saying goodbye to Jamila, Lara and Terry headed for Essaouira for a relaxing beach break. On their three-hour drive to the small walled town, they caught a glimpse of the famous goats that climb the trees, an intriguing sight, but one which has sadly been turned into a business by the local shepherds. So have some change handy if you want to take a pic!

In the beautiful port city of Essaouira, Lara and Terry managed to truly kick back and relax in Dar Lazuli, a cute three-storey Riad with rustic-chic décor. As they meandered around the high city walls, they took in the amazing views of Essaouira’s splendid beach and witnessed the daily catch come in at the fishing port. Watch Lara and Terry's slideshow of a saunter around Essaouira and join them for lunch while they tuck into a seafood feast at the most popular local restaurants.
