Parks, food and markets in Buenos Aires
The 12th country on the Grantourismo itinerary was Buenos Aires, a charming, cool city with friendly people, delicious food, brilliant wines and a laidback lifestyle. On their quest to focus on everything local and authentic, Lara and Terry discovered the city through its parks, food and markets and discovered an affordable, popular place, ideal for shopping and eating. The last time Lara and Terry came to Buenos Aires in 2007 they used to wander over to Palermo Viejo to take in the leafy streets and admire the beautiful architecture. This trip, however, they were looking forward to experiencing the 'hood like a local, from their own sleek Palermo Soho apartment
After checking in the apartment, Lara and Terry took a stroll down to Palermo’s splendid parks
, only a ten-minute walk away, to hang out with the locals on the lawn. In Buenos Aires, the locals escape to the city’s parks to soak up some rays the moment the sun shines, especially on weekends, so a visit to one of the cities' lovely parks is a must for those looking to get a real taste of the place.
Another great way to experience a place like a local is to visit the local markets, so the Grantourismo team didn't miss the opportunity to head to the antique, hippy, handicrafts, and flea markets in Buenos Aires
. Right up there with a browse through one of the city’s many buzzy markets and a lazy afternoon in one of Palermo’s parks was for Lara and Terry a visit to La Feria de Matadores
too, a market and fair that celebrates cowboy life and all things rural and a decidedly local and down-to-earth affair.
And because for Lara and Terry Buenos Aires is one of the great food cities of the world, they had to take advantage of the fantastic array of restaurants. However, in keeping with their quest to focus on food that is local and authentic to each place, the couple stuck to eating the most popular and traditional of Argentine food in the most quintessential Porteño eatery, the parrilla
. Finally, after a more unusual encounter
, Lara and Terry offered their 20 tips on staying safe in Buenos Aires and other big cities
