Family holidays in CorsicaEnjoy the majesty of Corsica with the whole family
HomeAway travel expert
Formed by volcanic eruptions, Corsica is the most mountainous of all the Mediterranean islands. Spectacular mountains, in fact, make up two-thirds of this destination; but don’t let this put you off taking a family break here. With so much natural beauty, so many incredible beaches set off by dramatic backdrops, and rich French-influenced culture, cuisine and history, Corsica’s not only brimming with things to see and do; but affordable family activities, too.
What with its national park, full of opportunities for adventure, and its fantastic summer weather which brings fun days out at the beach, Corsica can't fail to enchant even the most finicky of kids; whatever their age. The hottest months occur, not surprisingly, during the summer, when families flood the beaches and little ones splash around in the safe shallows; but the island in spring and autumn equally guarantees an excellent time, each season bringing its own charms. Once you're there, HomeAway can set you up with correspondingly charming accommodation; but before you start booking, why not read on for our top tips?
Our favourite family spots in Corsica
Family holidays in Lumio
Set on the hillside, the village of Lumio regularly attracts society's upper echelons: artists, supermodels, sports figures. But aside from the stray celebrity, the Corsican landscape itself makes this a great place for families. The number of activities on offer is considerable, whether you're a diehard nature lover or just fancy a spot of adventure. There are hiking trails of various degrees of difficulty, and the weather to make all of them enjoyable: take your pick from Scandola National Park or Le Parc de Saleccia. Kids will love the pebbly beach and snorkelling on offer here, while parents can enjoy the unique architecture, particularly the lovely churches. That the cuisine and drinks at the local bars and restaurants will delight Mum and Dad goes without saying; and even little ones won't fail to be tempted.
Family holidays in Porticcio
For those seeking a holiday near the beach (and let's face it, who isn't?) Porticcio is a gateway to paradise. Even little photograhers couldn't fail to capture the beauty of this area's varying landscape; a scene matched for beauty only by the historical architecture and cobbled streets which stand testament to the island's rich cultural history. Trekking beyond the city, you'll find secluded bays and coves along Porticcio's quiet beaches, where little ones can swim in safety while Mum and Dad catch some rays. Afterwards, take the whole family to the Tower of Capitello for unforgettable and picture-perfect views spanning blue water, green hills, and towering mountains.
Family holidays in Monticello
If relaxation is the aim of your family holiday, book your stay in quiet, idyllic Monticello. Set in the hills, Monticello offers stunning views of lush low-lying regions, distant mountains, and the long, sparkling line where water meets shore. In all fairness, Monticello isn't exactly Corsica's party capital; but this is what makes it the perfect destination for families with young children. It is the perfect spot for a retreat from the busy world, and hosts some of the best views on an island characterized by beautiful views. Grab a seat at a family friendly local café, a refreshing drink (or glass of wine for Mum and Dad), and simply enjoy spending time together, away from the norm.
Family holidays in Porto Vecchio
Another of Corsica's coastal towns, Porto Vecchio allows you to enjoy beaches and mountains both. Visit the Old Town for plenty to see and plenty to eat: bars, cafés, and restaurants are abundant here, where residents and tourists alike love to gather and enjoy the ample sunshine. You can also find many shops and designer boutiques here (if parents want to enjoy a shopping spree), or opportunities for watersports around the marina. A vibrant evening scene will keep older children entertained after the sun has gone down, but for those with little ones, a HomeAway villa with a view will provide the perfect place to unwind; once they've run out of steam, of course!
Family holidays in Ajaccio
Ajaccio is the capital and the largest city on the island of Corsica, so it's a great spot for family holidays. During your stay, be sure to stop in at Casa Buonaparte, the house where Napoleon was born in 1769: history buffs will appreciate that one of the museums in Ajaccio, the Musée Fesch (a renowned fine art museum today) was also the one-time home of Napoleon’s uncle. If the kids can't take any more history (but you can), hop aboard the little tourist train that circuits Ajaccio's Old Town. Alternately, head out to sea on a sailing excursion: there are lots of packages available for novices and experts alike. Once the sun sets, don't pass up the chance to sample the region’s distinctive and flavorful delicacies: the local restaurants and cafés are unrivalled.
