Holiday cottages near Alton Towers

Considering its status as one of the premier attractions in the United Kingdom, it would not be unreasonable to say Alton Towers is surprisingly inaccessible. Located in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside, a visit to this enormous theme park is something of an all-day activity for anyone who doesn’t live in the immediate vicinity; and many who have boarded a coach for a school trip to the park will recount tales of their 4am departure . If you’re looking for a short break that incorporates the resort, your best bet by far is to find a property nearby. The quaint country surroundings of Alton Towers make it a near perfect location for a traditional English cottage - and a quick browse on HomeAway will yield plenty to choose from. To make life easier, we’ve compiled a list of our top suggestions for where to base your trip.

  1. Cheap cottages in Farley

Speaking strictly in terms of proximity, Farley is the most convenient town for your trip to Alton Towers. You won’t find much in the way of attractions here - more a rustic English charm and quaint village pubs. Just what you need to unwind after a day of white-knuckle action on Oblivion et al! Whilst friendly, the locals themselves aren’t exactly keen on their neighbouring attraction – over the years they have launched frequent campaigns to have it closed due to noise.

  2. Cheap cottages in Ashbourne

Just a few miles east of Alton Towers lies Ashbourne, a quintessentially English market town famed for its bewildering annual tradition of Royal Shrovetide football. Each year on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, the town splits in two and becomes a three-mile long “football pitch” as thousands of players vie to get one over their neighbours. Of course, you are not obliged to participate in this spectacle - in fact, you may prefer to simply spend a frankly more relaxing day on the Nemesis!

  3. Cheap cottages in Uttoxeter

One of the larger centres in the Alton Towers area, Uttoxeter is the perfect town to set up camp. The main market square ensures that it maintains a distinctly rural demeanour, but should you desire more excitement, you can always spend a day at the much revered racecourse. When you’re ready to take on Rita: Queen of Speed, Air and the unsettling guided tour that is Hex: Legend of the Towers, the park is a brisk ten-mile drive away.

  4. Cheap cottages in Cheadle

If you just can’t wait to experience that giddy childhood excitement of approaching the gates or seeing the roller coasters jutting above the trees from afar, then Cheadle is one of your closest options. A mere five miles from Alton Towers lies this small and quiet town, dominated by the spectacular spire of St Giles Catholic Church. Between trips to the park, the church is well worthy of a visit, blessed as it is with beautiful arches and stunning 19th-century architecture.

  5. Cheap cottages in Stoke-on-Trent

The closest major city to Alton Towers is Stoke-on-Trent, lying some 15 miles due west of the park. If you’re travelling with the entire family, this is undoubtedly your finest option - such is the wealth of activities on offer for the youngsters. Festival Park incorporates a variety of leisure commodities, from the usual cinema and bowling alley to a ski slope and toboggan run. Elsewhere, you can visit the Gladstone Pottery Museum to learn about the craft for which the city is most esteemed.
