    Things to do

-Beaches. On an island renowned for its sublime beaches, Alghero has some great choices along 80 kilometres of coastline, including two fabulous examples at Bombarde and Lido san Giovanni. Bombarde is a long curve of sand, backed by picnic areas and forest. Lido san Giovanni is stunning, with a white sandy bay lapped by clear waters and framed by pine-clad hills.

-Diving. The calm, clear and warm waters just off the coast make for ideal diving conditions, and in the Alghero area you’ll find eight dive centres. The main destination for trips is the marine reserve at Capo Caccio, just next to Alghero, which provides a habitat for a wealth of underwater life, and also boasts spectacular caves.

-History. Alghero is a picturesque town, surrounded at points by seven of its original defensive towers, dating to the 1200s and built by the Genoans. In the old town you’ll find an array of palazzi, in the gothic, baroque and neoclassical styles. Well worth a visit is the baroque church of San Michele, easily recognised by its unusual dome, which has become a symbol for Alghero.

-Food and drink. The cuisine around Alghero is simple and rustic, with an emphasis on vegetables. A classic dish here is favata - fava beans cooked with sausage and bacon. The vineyards in the Alghero area produce a range of highly regarded red, white and rose wines. There’s also the Sorso Sennori muscat, a sweet dessert wine.

-Outdoor activities. You can admire Alghero’s natural and human history along an archaeological trail next to the coast just outside the town. Amid wild Mediterranean vegetation you’ll discover Roman villas and Phoenician ruins overlooking Porto Conte Bay. From the tourist port you could also catch a boat to visit the House of Neptune, an impressive grotto at the base of nearby Capo Caccio.
