Make a holiday apartment in Montegiove your home away from home

Montegiove sits in one of the greenest parts of Umbria, a lush verdant countryside close to the Tuscan border with olive groves, fruit trees and hills that roll for miles. Montegiove is a small village with an ancient castle, but few attractions and amenities in its centre. That said, it is a wonderful point from which to explore the wider region: nearby are the mediaeval town of Fabro famous for its truffles and the leisure and sporting activities on and around Lake Trasimeno. As a peaceful base, Montegiove ticks all the boxes.

HomeAway has lined up a collection of lovely holiday apartments in Montegiove that bask in the green splendour of the Umbrian countryside. Every creature comfort is taken care of as these delightful rental properties come with televisions, microwaves, washing machines and much more. Some are housed in farmhouses and villas that have their own private grounds and swimming pools. Holiday villas in Montegiove also enjoy countryside views and are good-sized properties that can cater for large groups. Umbria is one of Italy’s most beautiful locations and HomeAway has holiday rentals in other picturesque parts of the region including Foligno and Montefalco.

    Things to do

-Historic buildings: One of the village’s most intriguing sights is the Castle of Montegiove, a 13th-century stronghold that’s one of the oldest mansions in Umbria. The castle’s estate encompasses nearly 1,200 hectares that consist of oak forests, olive fields, vineyards, arable land and stone-built farmhouses.

-Watersports: Visitors with holiday apartments in Montegiove are never too far away from a host of exciting activities. Trasimeno Lake is the fourth-largest lake in Italy and is less than an hour away by car. Several watersports can be enjoyed on the lake including sailing. Beginners can book sailing courses at the Club Velico Castiglionese in Castiglione del Lago. Other leisure pursuits around this ribbon of water include horse riding, golf, walking and cycling.

-Sightseeing: In addition to Montegiove’s castle more historic buildings can be discovered and explored in Fabro, a medieval town that’s 15 kilometres from Montegiove. Among the sights are San Martino Church, erected in the 19th century, an old castle redesigned in the early 17th century, and a 19th-century town hall. Fabro is also a good spot to wine and dine in the many restaurants here, or to stock up on provisions from the shops.

-Events: The Umbrian truffle is a highly prized and much sought after food delicacy, and the woods around Fabro are filled with them. Every year during the second week of November the town hosts the National Truffle Fair during which hundreds of people go foraging for the delicious fungus.
