Make a holiday apartment in Portoferraio your home away from home

If you’re in search of the ideal holiday apartment in Portoferraio then HomeAway has a big choice of rentals. On the north coast of Elba you’ll be minutes from a variety of beaches and close to picturesque fishing towns, beautiful natural spots and a host of historical sites. Many holiday homes in Portoferraio are elegant old buildings set in large grounds, tastefully restored and equipped with everything a modern family could need. Most Portoferraio apartments offer barbecues and gardens with patios and outdoor furniture - in summer there’s nothing better than a sunset or moonlit meal in the evening.

    Things to do

-Local history. Elba has thousands of years of human history on display. To many it is famous for Napoleon, who was exiled here in the early-19th Century. Both his summer and winter homes are open to the public. Around Portoferraio are the remnants of Roman and Etruscan buildings, as well as a collection of historic churches from various eras.

-Coast. Elba has a host of lovely beaches of all descriptions. Locally, some of the best can be found just west of the Bay of Portoferraio. Cala dei Frati for instance, is a beautiful pebble beach with calm waters and framed by cliffs. Neighbouring this is Padulella, which is known for its crystal clear waters and has a mix of sand and shingles.

-Nature. There’s lots of untouched nature to explore, both on land and by water. Elba is part of a national park preserving the Tuscan Archipelago, and sometimes a charter boat is the only way to access the many hidden coves and beaches protected by sheer cliffs. On land you’ll be struck by the variety of landscapes Elba offers, and there are also signs of the island’s ancient past all around, with Etruscan ruins, Roman quarries and old stone villages.

-Food and drink. Elba’s cuisine is based on simple dishes made up of fresh ingredients, especially seafood. One popular local dish is cuttlefish risotto – the ink from the fish is used to add colour to the rice. Another is stuffed sardines or cod cooked in tomato, chilli and basil. You could also sample local produce like olive oil, honey and a range of jams.

-Diving. At Portoferraio you’ll be next to one of Elba’s best dive sites. The bay here supports a fantastic variety of sea life, and also boasts spectacular underwater rock formations. There’s also a wreck – a German Junkers 52 aeroplane was shot down just north of Portoferraio’s lighthouse during the war, and rediscovered in 1997.

    Weather in Portoferraio

Portoferraio holiday homes are on an island with a mild Mediterranean climate. There’s warm weather here from around June to September, culminating in highs of 27 degrees or more in July and August. There’s little rainfall in the summer, until September, which heralds the wettest period of the year, lasting until December. Temperatures drop steadily towards the end of the year, but you can still expect highs in the double figures in January and February. The spring months are usually mild, with highs in the mid-teens for April.

Elba has ferry connections to the mainland between Portoferraio and Piombino. If you’re travelling from the UK then you could fly from a range of airports to Pisa (PSA).
