    Things to do in Corte

    -The citadel dating back to 1419 has an imposing location overlooking the town and is the most popular attraction in Corte. It is reached by following the old streets through the hills. The Citadel is the ideal place to view the surrounding rivers and mountains and is also home to the National Museum of Corsican History.

    -Religious monuments are plentiful in Corte, such as the Church of the Annunciation, and like a number of buildings still bear the scars of the wars that have been fought in the area. Built in about 1450 and then rebuilt in the 1600s it is an excellent example of the Corsican ecclesiastical style. Made of stone it is still well used and well visited, and here it is bullet holes from the war of Independence remain. A highlight of the visit is the outstanding pulpit.

    -The GR20 hiking route is recognised as one of the most stunning but also most arduous treks in Europe and not for the faint hearted. However, about 30kms south of Corte holiday homes is the village of Vizzavona and from here, there is a one hour walk along the GR20 to the picturesque Cascade des Anglais. You pass through prettye villages en route, each having a bar or restaurant so you can stop for refreshments making the trip far from arduous but well worth it.

    -The Restonica River and valley is popular with both bathers and hikers. It can be so relaxing walking along the trail and then cooling sown in the pools and there are two paths allowing beginners to take one and more experienced hikers to take the other. One of the most popular trips will take around 4 hours and involves walking past lakes Capitello and Melo. For experienced walkers there is the journey to Monte Rotondo which is 2,600m and it should be noted when it is not summer the lakes can be frozen.

    -The beaches of Corsica are among the most gorgeous in the Mediterranean but, if you’ve opted for a holiday home in Corte you will need to travel some short distances to reach them. Being located in the northern centre of the island, visitors can choose to go west or east, or even north to reach the coast. The size of the island means you’re usually only 30 minutes to an hour away from a beautiful stretch of sand and crystal clear waters.
