The Serre Chevalier ski resort has 63 lifts and 2800m of ski slopes. Almost 700m of that is above the tree line, as well. Off the mountain, there is still plenty to see. The nearby town of Briancon is the highest city in Europe. It also boasts the 17th century “Fortifications of Vauban”. These are named after King Louis XIV’s military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) who designed them to defend against the Austrians. The fortifications are so impressive that they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The area is also host to a number of outdoor activities that are not related to the Serre Chevalier ski area. The town sits on the edge of the Ecrins National Park, which is an excellent place for ice climbing in the winter, but also kayaking or rafting, hiking and general adventuring over the summer months.
