    Things to do

-Navy UDT-SEAL Museum: Take a glimpse into special operations warfare with this museum dedicated to the US Navy SEALs. Including a memorial to all the SEALs and Underwater Demolition Team divers who've perished during the unit's history. Other displays feature the equipment and artifacts accrued during their operations, including the Alabama Maersk lifeboat from which Captain Richard Philips was rescued!

-Watersports: With several yacht clubs and marinas, Fort Pierce is well equipped to supply your boating needs, whether they be for fishing, skiing, sailing, or wildlife watching. Surfing equipment can be rented and surfing lessons bought at a number of outlets in and around the seafront area.

-Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge: An hour to the north of your Fort Pierce holiday accommodation is the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. This turtle sanctuary protects over 20 miles of coastline to allow the endangered turtles to lay their eggs in peace, most importantly the rare Loggerhead Turtle, for which this is the most significant nesting ground in the Western Hemisphere.

-Lake Okeechobee: The largest lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee, is less than an hour's drive from your holiday rental in Fort Pierce. Flood damage in the 1920s inspired extensive dike construction using earth from the lake to create a navigable parallel canal. A paved scenic hiking and biking trail now runs along the top, ringing the entire 730 square mile lake.

    Weather in Fort Pierce

Aside from the odd hurricane, Florida's weather is tremendously predictable, with long hot summers and warm winters. As a winter destination, only very occasional days are chilly enough to warrant wearing a jacket or jumper, with the majority of weather matching a typical British summer, albeit without quite as much rain. The long summers are subtropical, with frequent heavy rainstorms, but they are mercifully short in duration. The rest of the time it is hot and humid, with the temperatures hitting the mid 30s Celsius. Hot, but manageably so.

    Travel to Fort Pierce

Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale International Airports have no direct flights to Europe, but they are the closest large airports to Fort Pierce from a connecting flight from elsewhere, with Palm Beach at 67 miles away and Fort Lauderdale at 110. Main international airports dealing with direct flights are Orlando and Miami, at 110 and 130 miles respectively. Flying in and hiring a car is really the only way to travel in Florida; taxiing is expensive and the bus services are typically hopeless. Much better to travel around using the method the US is designed for; an automobile. Greyhound buses do have a stop in Fort Pierce, however, but there are no rail facilities.
