    The area of Leukerbad in the Swiss canton of Valais is a popular area for skiing in the winter and mountain hiking in the summer. It is also famous for its spa waters and was developed as a health resort in 1501 by Cardinal Matthaus Schiner although its springs were used back in Roman times. It is accessed through the mountains via the Gemmi Pass and the town of Leukerbad can then be seen in the valley below, surrounded by impressive cliffs.     The Burgerbad or community thermal centre is in the heart of the town of Leukerbad and is well worth visiting.
