    Things to do

-Beaches: Very convenient to El Pla del Real is Playa de Malvarossa, which is a fantastic urban beach extending for more than a kilometre. With Blue Flag status, the sands and water are both spotlessly clean and there are also great shops and restaurants close at hand. South of the city is El Saler beach, which serves as a less frequented choice and is part of a natural preserve.

-History: To get a feel for Valencia’s long history, the main place to go is Barri del Carme, which today is known for its forward-thinking inhabitants and exciting independent shops. The Cathedral is a beautiful melange of styles, bringing together Moorish, Baroque and neo-classical elements. The Silk Exchange (Llonja de la Seda) is a UNESCO-listed landmark, and a fabulous example of medieval Valencian Gothic architecture.

-Attractions: The City of Arts and Science is a futuristic complex of educational attractions and performance venues. The architecture is really something to behold, and within the structures are good options for family days out, including an IMAX theatre, aquarium, a planetarium and an interactive science museum.

-Food and drink: Valencia is the home of the perennially popular Spanish dish, paella. This is rice infused with saffron and simmered with meat and/or seafood. The local variety normally involves rabbit and chicken. Arròs negre is another tasty rice dish; it takes its name from the squid ink that is used to dye the rice black. Fideuà is another regional speciality, and has the same basic ingredients as seafood paella, but using short noodles instead of rice.

-Fallas: Mid-march is a special time to be in the city, as this is when one of Spain’s most memorable public celebrations takes place. Fallas is a literal explosion of sound, colour and lots of gunpowder, also entailing parades of huge papier-mâché models, which are incinerated on the final night at an event called La Cremà.
