It is an opportunity to have a completely unique holiday with a range of activities on your doorstep. As well as activities such as golf, tennis and bird watching, visitors can enjoy seeing Luxor from a different perspective by way of a hot-air balloon ride. Camel rides, mountain biking and felucca trips along the River Nile are also popular activities to be found in Luxor.

Approximately 20 kilometres outside of the city is the famous Valleys of Kings and Valley of Queens. In these areas you can see the tombs favoured by Pharaohs of ancient Egypt, many with stunning wall paintings and hieroglyphs. The most famous Pharaoh known in the West, Tutankhamun, had his tomb here and many of the artefacts found by Howard Carter can be seen in the Egyptian Antiquities Museum.

The Valley of The Queens is home to the tomb of Queen Nefertari, which is one of the largest tombs open to the public. Other historical sites not to be missed include The Temple of Luxor, Hatshepsut’s temple and Deir el-Medina, the village of the artisans who worked on the pyramids.

Places to Visit on Holiday to Luxor, Egypt

Approximately 50 kilometres to the south of Luxor is the ancient city of Edfu. The most prominent attraction in the city is The Temple of Edfu, which is the second largest in the whole of Egypt. The temple is dedicated to the sun God Horus and is very well preserved. The temple is fascinating due to the large inscriptions on the outside walls that tell the story of how the temple was built. The reliefs in what was the inner courtyard are also worth a look.

To the west of The Temple of Horus in Edfu are large piles of rubble which indicate the location of the ancient city of Tell Edfu, from which archaeologists have found artefacts dating back to the period of the Old Kingdom.
