Freeport, Grand Bahamas - Bahamas without the crowds

A number of years ago someone suggested I had a look at The Bahamas as an area to buy a vacation home. I arrived in The Bahamas at Nassau spent a few days looking around and looking at property and decided it was pretty crowded, a little dirty for my taste and came to the conclusion Bahamas was not for me. Then my realtor suggested I looked at Freeport being a little naive I asked what part of the Island Freeport was situated, of course only to be informed politely it was a different Island!! Now of course since living here I have learned that there are over 700 Islands making up the Bahamas.

I arrived in Freeport, and boy what a difference!! Two lane roads (but NO traffic, rush hour here seems to consists of 5/6 cars at the traffic lights at 9.00 am)

An island that is 30 miles by 12 miles but with only 30,000 people, great shops, lots of duty free!!!

There are also a couple of very large hotels, including the Westin and Sheraton, with their own Casino for those who fancy a flutter and dozens of great restaurants catering for every taste. The only down side of the duty free shopping is that my good lady wife is always spending money in the jewellery shops, but I have to admit the prices are great!!

The beaches away from the hotels are deserted, and after taking the dog for a walk in the morning, when I come back in the evening often the only foot prints in the sand are the ones I left there that morning!! But for those who want Jet Ski’s, booze cruises, scuba or EVEN diving to feed the sharks, it's all here in Freeport

We call one of our homes paradise, it would be more correct to call them all paradise, I am sure one day Freeport will become the bustling city that I found in Nassau but until then I strongly suggest to anyone looking for an inexpensive holiday to give serious consideration to enjoying this little piece of paradise that has still not been discovered despite it being only 30 miles from Florida!!

Whatever kind of holiday you are seeking, Freeport has it all, but one of its best highlights are the people; very warm, very genuine people who really understand that the tourist industry is very important for the Islands survival, something which I personally feel makes a good holiday into a destination you return to time and again.
